Back to the type of oil to use in motorcycles, I stumbled onto this very informative article. It's very lengthy but has some great information.

Also click on the high lighted text that says "all about oil"

That is the link that convinced me that I was wasting my money on "Motorcycle" specific oil. I have always maintained my vehicles with over the top care, because I never want to be the guy that has a mechanical or some other failure because of lack of maintenance. But I'm convinced the car oil is fine for 3-4,000 miles at a pop. This subject will always have pro and con sides. Interesting, though...

Having a high mileage 900 triple I feel it's my duty to weigh in here. I have used Mobil 1 15w-50 auto since day 1. No clutch slipping, no leaks, no smoke, runs great, starts every time. 39 mpg city, 45 mpg highway. Changed every 4000-5000 miles.

Around here it seems that they have discontinued the $4.75 Mobil 1 15w-50 red cap and replaced it with $6.00 Mobil 1 15w-50 "extended performance" gold cap. Probably the same stuff for $1.25 more, Greedy a$$ oil company.

My Sprint has 79,000 miles on the clock.

I used the official Triumph black gold and filters for most of my two year warranty period (changed every 3-4000 miles) then switched to Mobil 1 15w-50 (aka 'red cap"). I now use Mobil 1 15w-50 "gold cap". I found it for under $5/qt at WalMart.

There's a test somewhere on the web that shows the new gold cap really is an improvement over red cap and is probably better for bikes too. Saw a link to the test on Sport-Touring.net many months back shortly after gold cap was introduced. I've just switched from official Triumph oil filters to Purolator Pure One PL14610 filters too. Price of an oil change with high quality materials is down to about $22 now. Works for me, YMMV...

Shell ROTELLA T Synthetic 5W-40 works very well. 13 bucks a gallon at wallyworld. Shell says no problem in motorcycles. Use it in all of mine.

I just saw Mobil 1 racing 4T 15W-50 at a local store. It was 40€/4L.
