Hey guys, just about to pick up my 05 Triple and I have been looking very hard at breaking it in as per Motoman guidelines. Do any of you have any concrete opinions either way?

Hey Tommy,

I have read motomans guidelines and while I can see the logic in his arguments, I would be very reluctant to ignore the manufacturers recommendations, after all they designed the thing. I have broken in quite a few bikes over 35 years or riding and I have heard all the theories about "bikes that are run in hard, go harder". These theories have been around for years and yet bike manufacturers still don't subscribe to them. It is a relatively short run in period for the S3. My recommendation would be to stick to Triumph's recommendations, but don't go too easy, that may not be too good either.

Good luck with the new bike. I am waiting too...another three weeks for me. The waiting is killing me.

I would mostly stick to the mfgr guidelines, but wouldn't be afraid to give it a little (briefly) now and then. Avoid steady throttle. Exercise the allowed rev range up and down, using lots of engine braking. I could break=in someones bike in a normal weekend of riding. It's not that painful a process if you just get out and go for a couple all-day rides in the twisties. Those torquey motors pull just fine at low RPMs.

Eh!
Picked up THE machine yesterday... already put some 190 kms on my baby! The 5000rpm limit is much, much sweeter! I don't think the break in period will be all that hard to endure!

Oh Christ!

I have used Mototunes method of break-in on my last 3 bikes

01 roadstar 1600 W/ HP pistons
05 GSXR 750 track bike
05 R6 girl friends bike

"Mototune's break-in method did not match any of the manufactures break-in recommendations"

Changing oil after the first hundred using dino oil, (found small shavings on drain plug magnet - normal) and going to full synthetic after 1600 miles.
All bikes run verrrry strong, and the oil after the second oil change (600 mile) the oil was clean, no visible signs of blow-by contamination on either bike

On the 05 S3 - I finished the break-in using manufacture recommended for the first 100 after that I do a series short strong rolls on the throddle to the 7's & 8's up to 4 gears whenever I get the opportunity "do not slam the throddle" slow steady roll to force the rings to the cylinder walls and get a good seating of the rings and other internal
components.

Triumph uses a semi synthetic for the initial break-in and the service department recommends Mobil 1 racing 4T 15W-50 for the first oil change (which really slows down the break in time IMO) I am wondering if it would not be better to stick with the semi-synth untill the third oil change

(forget trying to buy Mobil 1 racing 4T at wally world or auto parts store) There is a Mobil 1 15W-50 extra protection for autos but may not be good for wet clutch on Motorcycles.

I found the recommended oil online for $48. best price, my dealer sells it for $66. in a 4 Qt. jug (it may be liters)

I asked my friend whos a engineer and motorcycle drag racer rebuilder for 30 years about breakin. I was thinking the same thing when i got my 02 s3 it was the first new bike i had owned. He said dont lug the engine in a higher gear at low rpm and i could give it short bursts up 8500 rpms. Dont redline it until after first oil change at 500 mile service worked for my bike i guess got 8000 miles on it no issues.
