I was sitting in the garage today looking the bike over and doing little tweaks here and there as usual and noticed my bars were staggered off by about 1/4 inch to the left. Well, once I got them loose to move them I started playing with various ideas of bar placement and though, "hmm, I wonder if these could mimic clip-ons..."

SO, I took all the controls off, flipped the bars 180degrees and then bolted them down cafe racer style. I came very close with the clearance to the tank, but everything else is looking clear and unbound so I ran the bike down the street to the nice quick S-curve and ran it around for a little while. I immediately noticed the riding position is a LOT lower. I'm basically laying on the tank like the old-school cafe racers and my back is a bit more strained, but nothing horrible yet. I'll have to make an hour+ run down 105 or 65 by the river to get a real feel for the long haul in this position. Otherwise, the handling is exceptionally stable over the standard upright position and it has made the knee down twisty flopping much easier with my weight down and forward over the front end.

I took a few pics of the bike with the bars flopped down and it doesn't look too bad. It looks strange from a few angles, but otherwise, this is THE cheapest way to play around with the idea of purchasing clip-ons. I'd rather not spend the $100+ if I'm going to hate this position...

I'm going to pick up a pixie hat and laminar lip and possible ride down to St. Louis with the bars set like this if I'm reasonably comfortable down low. I might need a blanket or something padded to make my chest comfortable though.

You realize that this is how they got lowered bars, back in the day. Before clipons. In fact, there are still some places where you can buy bars specifically designed to do this.

Check out some old pictures of 1940s and 1950s race bikes and cafe bikes.

You know, in a strange sort of way it works on the S3. I'm sure I won't be doing this any time soon, but I can appreciate it.

kuhlka,

Good looking bike with a lot of character. I like the lowered look too. May I ask, I have seen a lot of clip on mirrors, but can't say that I have run across those. They look really good! Mind telling?!

Those would be the Rizoma 'Reverse' bar-end mirrors a few people have been looking for. I bought em from TrickTape.com last year along with the matching Rizoma bar-ends. They're a bit pricey, but VERY well constructed. I never have any problems with them going out of adjustment from wind or bumps and the visibility is pretty good.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I've got a HHGTTG sticker on the back that says, 'Powered by an infinite improbability drive'. On the other side of the tail I've got the skull'n'crossbones that says, 'just a pirate searchin' for booty', lol. You probably noticed the Boba Fett bounty hunter stickers on my helmet, hehe.

Those Rizomas are so damned nice - I really like em.

I like the look of the low bars - not sure if I will be chamging mine, but it works

1 more question - I really like the gascap additions Where might one find that?

I got the gas cap cover from ImmortalGraphix!com on ebay. They also have a regular website but I don't see the UK gas cap cover on there after a quick look. I'm willing to bet if you asked their website you could probably order one even if it isn't listed. It is actually a raised tank pad material with a thick clear over the image so scratches and dirt haven't been a problem at all. It stays pretty clean, and looks a lot better than just a lump of gray in the middle of the tank.

Thanks for the info! Unfortunately...

"Do to production costs, we are discontinuing the gas cap covers"

Bah!

i wonder if its possible to cut the bar with a pipe cutter to get them a little closer to the triple tree.

how much clearance is there for that kind of operation?
