im gettin kinda cheesed at this. it loosens up and the front end starts clunking after about 300 miles. ***?

I just had warranty work done to replace the whole steering column. Mechanic told me they did replace a lot of them and Triumph revised the unit and hopefully the steering head bearings won't come loose again.

And as a temporary fix you should tighten it way too tight (bars don't move) and gradually loosen it until you have satisfactory handlebar movement again.

Don't remember the correct torques for the operation though, but this was on the tips section of a maintenance manual I once gave a quick glance at. The bearing is supposed to keep from loosening up so easily when it has been tightened this way instead of tightening it straight to spec. Something about seating the bearings first and whatnot.

Disclaimer: and as deliberately overtightening a bearing sounds a bit strange to me, try this at your own risk.
