I blew up my rear tire after 115 miles of ownership. I'm interested in taking off the rear wheel to drive it to the dealer for a new tire, but I'm anxious about that project because I've never done it before, and am concerned about replacing the wheel safely. I've got a Pitbull reversible stand.

Does anyone have any relevant information for me? Anybody know of a scan of the factory service manual for 2005?

Many thanks,

Shouldn't be anything really dfifferent to any of the previous models- you're ahead of the game already having a Pitbull!
1) Leave bike with both tires on ground - have a helper sit astride & apply the brakes (both ideally)
2) remove the lock ring from the spindle nut
3) "Crack" the spindle nut loose with a breaker bar & 6-point socket(it's a 46mm socket required - get one ahead if you don't already have one) 1-13/16ths is the inch equivelant.
4) Raise bike on Pitbull with stand on the left side of bike
5) Remove spindle nut & remove the wheel from the right side

Reverse to re-install and be sure to torque the spindle nut to spec (should be in your owners manual)

Thanks!

Some questions and points:

I have no helper. I do have a Baxley Sport Chock fron wheel chock which would lie on the floor without being bolted down. I assume the helper and the brakes are to prevent the bike from rolling backwards when loosening the axle nut. Do you think I could prevent backward rolling by pushing forward against the rear tire? Is it either necessary or desirable to hold the left hand side nut, to prevent spinning?

Any tricks to removing the lock ring? Do you push and/or pull it out of the hole through the axle, and then, does it come off readily?

I don't have the torque spec in my manual - not that I can find, at least. If and when I get the torque spec - is that all there is to replacing the wheel safely? Torque it correctly, and replace the lock ring?

Many thanks again,

The brake rotor does not come off with the wheel on the S3.

The Pit Bull single sided swing arm stand only works with single sided swingarm bikes. You will need different spindles to use it with different brand bikes. These are available from Pit Bull.

For the clip - you open it slightly (like a circlip) to pop it off the threads then pull it put of the hole like a split-pin.
Yes, you want to stop the bike from moving while you break the torque of the spindle nut - there is no need to hold the left side nut.
The front chock won't be of any help in this respect but can assist when re-torquing by putting the chock against a wall. Perhaps you can also try just pushing your bike back towards a wall before cracking the nut then moving it into a more open position to raise it on the Pitbull - I'd just be concerned about applying that much torque while on the side-stand- perhaps if you use the breaker bar pointing towards the front of the bike and then rotating it counter-clockwise from the horizontal position, that will more force it down on the stand.
But you don't have a neighbour's kid around? You only need someone for 30 secs tops for this step.
Torque is 146Nm or ~ 108 ftlb.

pay "close" attention to the order and orientation of any washers and spacers so that they are reinstalled properly.

Wheel is off.

I also happen to have a Baxley Sport Chock front wheel chock. I rode the bike into it, put it in neutral, broke the nut loose with the $65 Triumph 46 mm 6 point, 1/2" drive socket that I bought by driving 1.5 hours after work, rolled it out of the wheel chock, lifted it with the Pit Bull stand. Whatever washers there are all came off together in the cone shaped piece, so I just put this aside.

Tomorrow I drive back another 1.5 hrs, get a new tire, and I should be back on the road in no time.

I think that I'll be comfortable riding this thing after I get it back together, because it is very simple, and there doesn't seem to be any way to do it wrong. So I can have faith that the wheel will stay on.

Thanks to all,
