I just finished my break-in oil change for my 05 S3. The owner's manual is lame. Not only do they not tell how much oil goes in the engine, they list the incorrect torque setting for the Oil Filter. (it's listed correctly in the back of the manual but not in the oil change section)
Oh and the manual also neglects to mention that you should put the oil drain plug back in. I know you'd have to be stupid not to put the drain plug in, but if I followed the instructions in the owner's manual, I'd have watch the new oil drain right through the engine.
The owner's manual also says the the bike comes with a 185 rear tire. Mine came with a 180. Is there such a thing as a 185?
That being said, The bike itself is great. Triumph just needs to fire the person writing the owner's manual.
In case anyone is interested I put a little over 3 liters of oil into the engine. I haven't ridden it since I changed the oil, so I'll be checking the oil again before I ride the bike.

Maybe worth checking your oil level as the older triple uses 4 litres on the nose 3 seems quite light,i might be wrong maybe new 05 has less oil but i would doubt it. :-D :-D

4.25 liters sounds like a lot to me but what do I know? I'm still waiting for delivery of my first Speed Triple.

I did my own change on my '05 Sprint and it took 3.5 quarts to fill it. I need to check it again now that I have ridden it some.

I changed oil & filter in my Speed Triple 1050cc -05 and I filled it with max 3,5 liter of oil. If you check the manual for the 955i-engine (pre -05, which the S3-05 is based upon) it states 3,5 liter for a dry fill, 3,20 liter for wet fill incl.filter and 3,00 liter for wet fill excl. filter. Regarding the manual, remember that the '05 is a substantially new design, and the specimens in the hands of lucky owners right now are from the first month or so of production.
A lot of changes typically take place between product announcement and full production runs on the tight cycle Triumph maintains, and not all those get into the first printing of an owners manual. It's unfortunate, but I wonder how many would've been willing to wait another month or two in order to have a fully updated manual.
With the Rocket, also in great demand and also produced on a similarly tight schedule, units built in the second and third months of service arrived with revised pages stuck over preliminary pages in the book. It will be interesting to see if that holds true of more recent Speed Triples as well.

So they should have fired the people who did the manuals already. From what you're saying they already screwed up the manual for the Rocket. Now they're screwing up the manual for the S3. It wouldn't be so bad if you could download the manual from Triumph's web page.
It makes me wonder what else they've messed up in the manual. What if I over-torqued the oil filter and that caused something to break on the bike? The manual says in one place that the torque on the oil filter is 25nM and in the back of the manual it says something closer to 12nM.
It's just sloppy.
summary: Manual bad. Bike Good.
