I picked up my 05 S3 a few weeks ago and excuse if this is an obvious question but its my first bike so..

What (if any) option have people used to carry a small bag?
I'm thinking of installing the grabrail (when available) and just using some black bungies.

I come from a sport-touring background and luggage for the 05s3 is a good question! Unfortunately, I think there isn't too much in the way of luggage options for this motorcycle. I didn’t buy it thinking I would go sport touring on it, but I’d like to ride my 05s3 to work daily and I need an option for small items.

Saddlebags, hard or soft, are probably not an option due to the high pipes. Besides, I personally wouldn’t run with saddlebags unless I was touring anyway (I prefer a more svelte look).

A small tail bag might be a viable option (if you don’t have the seat cowling!) There seem to be many tail bags available and if anyone has experience with a good waterproof tail bag, I’d like to hear it!

A tank bag would be nice, since you can access it without getting off the bike. However, since the fuel tank is non-metal, straps are required. The Triumph tank bag might be the best bet, according to some of the experts on this forum. It seems like it is well made and thought out. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that one must cover the fuel tank with a tank bra to use it.

A courier bag or backpack is another option. Again, Triumph makes a nice backpack and there are other options from “Marsee” and other manufacturers.

I am very interested in seeing the creative ways that others will come up with to carry their stuff. Congratulations on your new bike!

I am also interested in possible tailbag options as there seems to be some issues with the availability of original Triumph accessories (or has someone actually seen the tankbag anywhere outside the accessory catalog?).

Bagster.com lists a tankcover for Triumph S3 '05 in yellow, blue and cream (no black!) and I have found their system very good on my previous bikes. Also they have a wide range of different bags available.

I am waiting on delivery of my new S3 - They have been slow to arrive here in Oz. I gotta wait until June 15....patience is not one of my virtues.

One of the things my speed triple will have to do is tour, and luggage will be a must. One of the best luggage systems around is made by Ventura out of New Zealand. Like Australia New Zealand is probably still waiting for the 05S3 to arrive, so the Ventura rack for this bike won't be available for a while. Check out their website at http://www.ventura-bike.com/ They don't have a photo of their earlier speed triple fitments but the Daytona 955i photo will give you an idea.
They have several luggage options some of which zip together to increase capacity. I have used this luggage system on my last four bikes and I recommend it. It is one of the most popular in Australia.

Cheers everyone, more things to look at.

Only have under 600miles on the S3 so far and am now waiting for its first service. So far I've not crashed it too! (tempting fate there I think). As a first bike it's everything I could have asked for while still keeping 90% in reserve for the future...

The best tailbag I've ever seen is RKA. Wonderful mounting system that attaches to the seat, doesn't touch any bodywork so no possibility of scratches. Very well made, not exactly cheap. That's usually how it goes right?

Correction to my previous post:
there is a black tank cover for '05 Speed Triple available from Bagster with the stock ref '1496U' (and Sprint ST: 1497U). The Bagster system is almost identical to the Triumph one, but bagster has 10+ different bags available for the cover, when Triumph has only 2.

I think I will opt for this one + a tankbag from bagster.com + the S10 tailbag from http://www.kriega.com/us10fit.html

Should be OK for a while and if I still need more storage I can always get the Kriega backpack also.

Tour Master makes a nice tail bag. I like there sport [ I think they call it] tail bag. It comes with a rain cover and sits low on the tail and has a good amount of room. They use a bungee cord system which I got rid of. I got a flat Velcro strap with I run through the bottom of the bag and under my seat so nothing touches the body work.
The bag is very well made and sells for around $60.00. They also have a wide selection of tank bags at a good price.
