Its been about a month now since I picked up my S3 and have spent every free moment riding her. One thing I found is that it would be nice to lower the bars closer level with the Triple Clamp by installing a set of Clip-On Bars. I do find the stock bar hight comfortable for around town but as for long road trips on the highway and no windscreen it gets quite tiresome.
So my question is, Has anyone out installed a Clip-On set on a S3 ? if so some input please. Those of you that have not I would like to know your views ( good or bad ) regarding this idea.

Thanks Boys N Girls

Hey aikojo, have you looked at this thread? It seems that we are brainstorming the same thing. Check it out and add your thoughts and findings.

Those pics you added look like the cyclecat kit, is it?

Hey Rudebwoy

Wish I could help with a couple pics, but Im in the same boat as you. The long commutes have been rough lately and Clip-Ons look to be a promising fix. I talked to a couple manufactures of Clip-Ons the past week to see if they'll offer a Application for the Speed triple. I learned that the majority of the makers were not interested in producing a set for the 05 S3 right away and felt it would be better to wait to see if their was a large demand for the application. Cycle Cat on the other hand seemed to already have the S3 in mind and was glad to know 05 S3 owners are looking for Apps. for their Bikes. During the conversation to Cycle Cat I mentioned that if I lived closer I would be glad to lend them my bike for a week to help hurry development, and they seemed to be very interested except that I live 2600 miles away. So if anyones interested and lives in or near Columbus OH you might want to give them a ring.

Well, although I don't have pics on bike - check my album here:

T-rat photo album for cyclcecats

I've been working with Cycle Cat to prove out the bars designed for the Daytona. The kit they sell works great for a racing position but doesn't offer much adjustability. If you want to race, I highly recommend it.

I am awaiting a new design riser (should be here in the next 2-3 weeks (cross fingers)) as it's on the mill right now. The new riser will give more clearance, adjustability to the tune of 8 vertical inches and many degrees all around. I'll post pix once it's here. I had delrin models of the new risers on the bike and was tempted (for about a second) to leave those on instead of the real things

All in all, CC has been an AWESOME company to work with. The product quality is top notch, the instructions rule and the kits are all inclusive. I hghly recommend it and them. I will chime in with a full redo of my photo essay once the new risers arrive. But as I said, from the delrin mock-ups this will be an overall (not just racing) winner.

CHeers.
Peet

P.S. a peek:

Personally, I'd stick with the handlebar (that's why I got an s3), but I've got the Gilles variobar system on my Aprilia and I think it's about the best out there. It's fully adjustible for sweep, tilt, and rise.

They're expensive - about $325 - but they're extremely well made and you get exactly the position that you want:

I've had a set of Woodcraft clip-ons on my S3 for the past two years, with no complaints. They keep you out of the wind and are not too uncomfortable despite having no risers.

You might also look into lower bars, or just cutting your bars- about three-quarters of an inch off each side would bring your arms together just enough to lower the sail effect and keep things narrow for heavy traffic filtering. The nice thing about this route is that bars are so cheap. You'll have to file off a little nub on the inside of your controls though, or drill another hole for it in the bars in the new location. I just filed it off the controls and haven't had any problems.

I really like Peeti's cyclecat kit. I checked their site but failed to see a set that looked like it'll fit the forks on the '05 triple (52mm).

Is there a reason why you didnt utilize the full height offered by the riser (looks like you secured them lower on the forks), interference with the fly screen perhaps or just personal preference. Higher up looked like it would offer greater comfort. Just curious.

Great album detailing the installation by the way, much appreciated!

Right now the Woodcrafts look to be the only type that would work that I can find, they come in 52mm and the 2 piece clamp will save me from having to drop the forks from the triple clamp, a task I've never done before and am afraid I'd screw up somehow. Unfortunately they seem much lower than I would like. I'd prefer the bars either at the level of or slightly higher than the triple clamp.

Sure hope my dealer comes up with something..

In the general sense, any clipons of the correct diameter will fit. Just find out what diameter your forktubes are below the upper clamp and get a set. Spiegler sells LSL tall clipons and I bet other sportbikes have USD forks of the same diameter. Just buy those.
