I've been toying with the idea of getting a 3/4 shell for my daily commutes (side streets, 10 miles at no more than 50 mph). In addition, I also have a sports car. Motorcycle lids are OK for autocross, but if I want to go on a track day, they require a Snell "A2000" or better rated helmet. It would also be a 3/4 style since chinbars and airbags don't mix.

Is anyone familiar enough with these to know if they'd make a decent lid on a bike, too?

I'm pretty familiar with the differences. From a Snell point of view the safety differences are minor. The A2000 rating and the M2000 rating differ only in the fact that the A has a fire retardant component. With full face helmets there is also a DOT mandated minimum eye opening that some of the open car full face helmets don't meet. Other than that they is no difference. Buying a 3/4 Bell or Simpson and using it for both is a great idea, I know many people who do exactly that.

Thanks. I knew about the fire protection, but didn't know if there were any other differences. They're probably not DOT approved, but I figure if folks can get away with a $20 "for novelty purposes only" beanie, no one will look twice at a Bell. Now I just need to find a shop where I can try some on.

Oh, and thanks to the rest of the board for not giving me a hundred posts on how unsafe a 3/4 lid is. In the words of my 3 fingered high school shop teacher, "it's OK to do something wrong, so long as you know what you're doing."
