rule for posting off-site links?

I just looked back at one of my posts which listed some links to pictures of a piece of gear. The on-site links are there, but all the off-site links were deleted. I was trying to a link I forgot to bookmark.

Is there a rule about off-site links? I went through the FAQ, I understand not cross-posting, that's annoying for everyone. I understand not advertising, that cheats supporters, etc.

Are we not allowed to post a reference to a thread on another forum off-site, if the pics are on-topic, and the site is family safe? I wouldn't consider that cross posting, but I would consider it a copyright violation of I downloaded and re-posted a pic, hence the reference to source instead.

Thanks.

Depends. As you may have noted in the AUP, one thing that's not allowed is recruiting for competing online forum communities. If someone links to one of those sites, the link may be removed. To the best of my recollection, that's what happened to your tank protector post two weeks ago. The pictures you linked here at T-RAT amply illustrated your point anyway.

A link may also be removed for copyright infringement if it points to a specific picture or other resource on someone else's page, and not the whole page itself. That can constitute what is called "taking" in copyright law, the use of someone else's intellectual property outside of their context and control, as though it were your own and/or without acknowledging their ownership...just as much as if you'd illegally copied the picture to photobucket and used it from there, for example.

Interesting. Does that apply to all sites external to triumphrat.net, or outside the motorcycle.com forum network?

Anyway, it's not really a big deal to me, but I've got to say I was surprised to see them go missing without a PM, or an "edited by" note. Kind of felt a little Big Brother, as you can imagine.

Might be worth putting that a little more specifically into the AUP.

The off-links posting is a little hard to define. Basically we don't allow advertising in the forums but if we consider a link is to the direct benefit of the members the Moderators would lean to give it a bit of leeway, these are on a case by case basis. We would also allow links to non-competing sites for the same reason. We allow links to 'sister' sites and a number of other Triumph sites on a reciprocal basis. Similarly we don't allow 'signature' advertising links with the exception of Site Sponsors.

Generally the Moderators try to advise by PM any action they have taken on a thread or indicate via the Post Edit banner if they considered explanation necessary.

This is in conjunction to what Diego has posted earlier.
