Question Rain Gear (Newbie Question...)

Heya folks!
So this being my first year as a rider, and heading into my first Pacific Northwest rainy season, I'm wondering if folks have opinions (Around here? Non! ) about what rain gear is best...

I'm a commuter so I'm looking for something that will go over my work clothes and not leave me looking like Inspector Colombo at the office. But as I live in rainy Seattle, I'm looking for something that will keep me as dry as possible. Super protection from the cold is less of an issue, as it rarely gets THAT cold here. Lastly, it wouldn't kill me if I didn't have to sell off my first-born to afford it. (But I'm not 100% against the idea either...! )

So...opinions/thoughts/links/etc. Any input would be helpful...

Thanks!

What do you wear for work? 3 piece, I doubt it in Seattle. #1, forget things like snowmobile suits or items at REI. Wrong material. Many motorcycle clothing manufacturers make full on full zip overwear that is waterproof, wind proof etc. These will be made out of the right material and have armor too.

here's my 2 cents....Frogg Toggs.....light weight, inexpensive, and will stand up to 65 mph on the freeway.....

I bought the Generic JP Cycles rainsuit form their catalog. Works great and was only ~$75

Living in the South Eastern US, we get a lot of the afternoon heavy rain showers and occasional tropical storm or hurricane.

I'm a year 'round rider and have Frogg Toggs for the Summer months; they're light weight and breathable and great for shorter commutes and brief down pours. I recently had an experience with them on nearly all day on a ride and experienced some soak-through on the side most impacted by the driving rain and winds. It wasn't much, but enough to notice. Fortunatley I was 10 miles from home and just didn't care at that point anyway. In my opinion, they're a good choice and aquired cheap enough. I paid $50 (US) at Cycle Gear for my set, and even bought a set for the wife who swears by them.

For heavier rains and extended riding, I purchased a rain suit from J&P Cyles for about the same $$ and have owned it for a couple of years now. It's never let rain through and has passed the test of time easily. It's only fault from my point of view is it's HOT to wear is the weather is temperate.

An added consideration is waterproof boots, or boot covers. I picked a set of the Tour Master Deluxe Rain Overboots for $19 from these guys:

and paid $7 shipping, by far the cheapest I've found. These work fantastic and are popular for a reason.

Gloves are another issue and something I'll leave to your personal taste.

Thumbs up

Very cool, thanks folks! This sounds consistent with what I'd read -- looks like I'm gonna be ordering some Frog Togs in the near future.

Mostly I just wanted to make sure to watch out for any "don't buy these..." kinds of products, as I seem to have an otherworldly talent for sniffing them out and wasting my money on them.

A dry place to park is the best solution. Be smart and be safe.
