I feel your pain BGD. I tried on several Triumph jackets before I found the one that I picked up today. Being of the female variety and larger than I used to be when I lived in the UK, I quickly gave up with the women's jackets and tried the men's (yep, I confirm that the sizing differences are completely culturally related. Good food = larger people )
The Rivton was my first choice as the colors matched my speedy, but it was way too big in the arms and shoulders. I walked away with the Retro Racer, which is a great fit and definately narrower in the shoulders, which worked perfectly for me. You probably have tried the Rivton, but it seemed to be the biggest in the shoulders.
The alternative, and something I considered, was getting a leather jacket that fits and having one of the large patches sewn onto the back.
Hope you find something in Triumph.

Have you tried the Stamford by Triumph? Its quite wide through the shoulders, not so hugging. I'm normally an XL to XXL and it fits fine. It has adjustable straps on the side to accommodate a wide girth. It looks a bit Marlon Brando on the Triumph website but once done up to the neck it can look quite retro.

I've got relatively wide shoulders but normal size arms (something to do with all the swimming I did as a kid) & find that my Triumph Hawk jacket has fine overall fit. I really like the jacket. It's expensive so I guess I'm locked in to riding Triumphs for a long while to come. I certainly hope so .

I've noticed that Triumph jackets are not size consistantly between models. For example, I have a Westbourne, size 40, and the newer Rivton, size 46. Huh?
Incidently, all of my Joe Rocket jackets have been consistantly 44, though I may have out-grown that size, a bit.

Fits well
I found a new Triumph Cordura Retro Paddock on ebay in XL which fits me perfectly and I am 6 feet @205 with long arms and 46 inch chest. It does fit snug but I have found that it really makes long rides better-it has a lot of trunk support. If I take the liner out, it's better for short rides.
I have a XL Fieldsher Highland Textile jacket that fits about the same but is much longer and has lots of pockets.
I was given a new leather Fieldsheer jacket size 46 that I cannot get into. It's really about a 42 or maybe even a 40. By the way, I'd love to trade it.
On the ebay site, there was a size chart converting E.U. sizes to U.S. and it was very accurate.

You must be broad of shoulder, oldmanjob. I loved that jacket as the colors matched my Speedy... black with the red inset and gold pinstripe. Wasn't meant to be for me. But I do love my retro racer

Retro letter
I found a Retro leather jacket. I pulled the elbow and shoulder pads out of it and it fit. Just have to make sure I'm not tempted with too many pints or I will never get into it. I want to try on a Rivton and my size sometime as well.

Sizing is getting really crazy - not just with Triumph clothing. I think that the outsourcing to China, where poorly overseen, has a lot to do with that.
I bought two First Gear jackets about four years ago. The Magnum is a size XL, the mesh jacket is an XLT (T for tall). Both jackets still fit me fine. I just bought a First Gear Scout IV leather jacket. I had to return the 2XLT that I was advised to order - too snug. The 3XLT I exchanged for does fit. But from XLT to 3XLT? And it isn't me - the older XLT is still a good fit.
I think Triumph falls into that "poorly overseen" outsourcing category for more than just jackets. I always wear a size XL glove. Always. I just bought Fieldsheer XL deerskin riding gloves and they fit great. But I tried on a XL set of the Triumph perforated leather summer gloves. Too small. Made in China of course. I ordered them in XXL - the largest size Triumph offers. Width was OK. The fingers were not long enough. Worse - the thumb was about an inch too long! Nobody has a hand shaped like that!
Needless to say I returned the Triumph gloves, and I've ordered my perforated leather gloves in XL, in a different brand (First Gear). Can't wait to see what I get.

Yay! Nice choice. I love my retro so much that it hasn't made it into the coat closet yet. It's hanging in the office on a book shelf so I can admire it
Glad you found something BGD.
