Proper Cleaning of Leather Jackets

I bought one of the Hawk leather jackets not too long ago and want to clean off all the dead bugs to prevent damage to the leather (if that's possible). I figured I'd check and see what everyone else is using to clean their jackets. I don't want to do anything to damage the leather, but I figure there is a safe way to do it, and unless I missed it there wasn't any type of cleaning instruction with the jacket when bought new.
Thanks.

I use saddle soap for cleaning and leather dressing for finish on my stuff. Not any particular brand, but the dressing I like has neatsfoot oil and vegetable wax treatment. I scrub the saddle soap in with a clean rough rag and wipe clean with another rag and let it sit for a while. Then work in the dressing with another clean rag and buff it with a boot brush for a satin look. All the rags and my brush get cleaned for the next time. I do it about once a year or so when I feel like it or if something nasty hits me. My gear has marks, scratches and flaws from under care and I like the character.

I've never cleaned my jacket... for the leather in my car, I use a fooffy product called GlipTone. One product for cleaning and one product for conditioning. Works for me...

Vanson Recommends Pledge. I tried it and it works great. Just let it sit a minute and wipe it off. Lemon fresh.

Wink

Warm water on a damp sponge, air dry & treat with a Leather Conditioner/Food. Available from any horse tack store or good bike shop. (Cheaper at tack stores)

Langlitz Leathers sells a very nice conditioner. Also, Lexol cleaner does a good job, followed by Lexol conditioner.

They do! Now I have another use for that stuff. I have been using Lexol for years, but Pledge is what I use on just about everything else.

Yeah, I thought it was a bit weird, but it works! After a couple of years, I treated the leathers with Renapur, which conditions the leather like Lexol, etc. But for bug removal and general cleaning/protecting, Pledge works great.

So why do Vanson market their own leather balm? At a very reasonable price it would appear.

I've got a Hawk jacket and use the sponge/hot water method to remove bugs etc. before I hang the jacket up. I don't think we get the products that have been listed here, but I'll check out what our local accessory shop stocks.

Good thread!
