I don't know what brand you are interested in, but I went with Triumph. Here is how I picked the right size. Go to a shop that carries the brand name you want. Try on the sizes and see what fits your body best. Write it down and shop the web. If you go with Triumph, I highly recommend www.onyertriumph.net. They were good to me and very helpful. Triumph markets different gear to different countries. The UK has it all, while the others, to include the USA, have much less. Hope this helps. :hammer: null

If I take advantage of the facilities and staff of a shop, I buy from them. Having worked in the bicycle shops over the years, its annoying then someone coming in, taking up space in your shop, trying a bunch of things on (and inevitably making a mess), then leaving to order online. The most annoying thing is when someone does all that, and takes your time and expertise, only to buy online.

Brick and mortar stores don't charge higher prices just for fun - they know the online prices as well as you do. But they have a large staff to pay that needs to be knowledgable and helpful (as opposed to answering phones and taking orders) and bills to pay so you can get to touch and try things on before you buy.

My problem is twofold: I don't think I'll fit anything off the rack, and I've tried on all the ones local shops have.

I could have my local shop order things in, and if they didn't fit they'd just put them in stock with no obligation to me, but I was hoping to get a better idea of what I should ask them to order before I put them through the trouble. Alternatively, if I can get a fairly high level of confidence that somethign will fit, I'll take the risk of having to ship it back and order it up...

Anybody else out there 6 foot plus with leathers?

I feel your pain. I'm 6'5'', ~215lbs with a 37'' inseam. There isn't a suit on the market that will fit me off the shelf...and I've tried several. At your height, there's two avenues you could take:

1. Get a suit custom made (~$1200 - $3000).
2. Buy an off the rack suit and get it tailored ($cost of suit + $100 - $300 & time)

If you're going to regular track days only go with a 1piece. My personal preference is a 2 piece...they're track legal and convenient when riding on the street. Do a google search and you should find a number of places will custom fit you and even let you design the suit. I can recommend a couple places if you're interested.

I ended up piecing together a Teknic 2-piece from various boards and then sending it off to get tailored. I spent a long time shopping but in the end only spend $450 including a new back protector and tailoring. I highly recommend this route...it's the cheapest overall and if you mark your suit right, it's just as good as getting a custom fit. Again...I can make recommendations on a tailor if you're interested.

I bought Blaster pants, but ended up with the Tourmaster Decker pants. Too bad you need taller. I will eventually get rid of my Blaster pants (36"). I sized them to wear over jeans or shorts.

CYLax - thanks!!! That's exactly the info I've been looking for. My local dealer ordered in a set of Joe Rocket Blaster pants for me to try on in a 36" (pay more, but no obligation to buy - I'm so funny shaped, they must hate me by now  )

I'd love to hear about your experience with tailors - I think that's going to be the route for me. I also definitely want a two-piece suit (as an added bonus, I can get by with the standard sizing on some jackets too)

If the Blaster pants don't work out (I'm not optimistic), I'll definitely keep an eye out for a good deal on a two-piece. I'm not sure my Blaster jacket or those pants are nice enough to merit getting tailored - I'd rather get that done to really nice gear...

I wanted to pass this on since after some research I decide to go for it. There is a company in Modesto California that will custom make a one piece set of leathers for 490.00

I have not received mine yet, but the people I have spoken with say the quality is comparable to either AlpineStar or Rocket. The folks I spoke with that have used this company have been quite pleased.

So rustbucket,
have you spent your hard earned coin yet?

Or are you still shopping?

Good prices and no hassle with exchanges if the gear doesn't fit.
