Thank you all for your responses. Very informative to me considering all have for protection is jeans and luck. I have been riding for almost four years with over 28, 000 miles and (knock on wood) accidents. Lately everytime I go riding I think to myself I should really have some kind of leg protection other than thin crappy jeans. So thank you all again. Thanks for the detailed post rustbucket.

Personally, for casual around-town riding, I'm a big fan of Carhartt double-knee work pants:

If you want added protection or are going for a longer ride, add Icon's knee/shin armor:

The Icon armor is terrific -- very comfortable, and it's pretty unobtrusive with pants over it.

Also, the Carhartt double-knee pants are very tough. I took a spill last autumn, went down in part on my left knee, and slid, and the pants didn't even wear through the outer layer of canvas.

I wish there was a better selection of standalone armor out there - the Icon stuff doesn't fit me well, and I haven't run into anything else street oriented that is just kneepads (or elbow). I'm not really excited by 'suits' of armor you can get. I'd love to have some CE approved, comfortable knee armor.

Hi, first post here.

Be careful with the Carhartts the rivets on the front of the pants will scratch you tank. That just happened to me today. It was very windy and I had to tuck up underneath the bars and one of the rivets took a pretty good gouge out of the paint on my new Bonnie Black with 300 miles on it. Bummer.

Rustbucket - +1 Great Info and comparisons

I just finished an extensive research into this subject so hope this helps. I wear leathers most of the time with good armor - can't beat it protection wise. Two problems - does get hot and you look like a sci fi channel soldier if you have to wear your kit into say a Barnes and Nobel to get a cup of Joe. Another problem my daughter doesn't want to wear full leathers when she only rides occasionally with me, but I don't want her just hanging in the wind with no protection.l So how to be protected and look normal?

Have bought jean style pants from astars, icon, sliders, and fast company. Of these no one can touch the Fast Company draggin jeans for thickness of material and Kevlar covered protection area. They are a little warmer than the others, but they are thicker. ONly problem I found was with the relaxed fit cut the rise( zipper area) was so high it came up and covered my entire abdoman - looked like a little old man whoes chest is connected directly to my legs with no waist - the classic fit does not have the massive rise and fit just like levi's but with a longer inseam so they don't rise up past your boots. They fit well and IMHO look good

If you go down with these only on like Rustbucket pointed out - you will get hurt and you will get some rash, better than regular jeans by a long shot, but still will wind up some rash and with no armor ( they do sell Knee armor, but you don't need it - keep reading) you will get banged up good

Solution.
Bohn Body Armor - http://www.bohnarmor.com/

I use the Adventure pants in both Lycra and Mesh ( for warm days) They fit well under the Draggin Jeans - almost invisable if no one is looking for it - of coarse you can see it if you know its there. You are procted in the hip, knee, thigh, shin and butt.

I am not trying to sell these by any means - but everytime I see a rider in jeans I want to tell them about these two products I have found. With these two - I think you will be just as protected as any $200 pair of leather pants and probably more so because the Bohn Armor is fantastic. No doubt it will not be as protective as the higher end leather pants like astars track pants, but I feel completely protected for street riding.

Lastly this is the combo I allow my daughter to ride with me wearing so I have to have great confidence with these two to protect my baby and I do. Hope this helps
ride safe

It doesn't fit me at all out of the box. Icon seems to think that everyone has really skinny calves. My calves are far from skinny. I could just barely get the ends of the straps through the loops, but not pull them back across and onto the velcro. So I made extenders -- got some adhesive velcro strips, stuck them back-to-back (to make a strip that's hooks on one side and loops on the other) and just used that to make up the difference in strap length. Works like a charm, and the pads are very comfortable. So comfortable, in fact, that I forget I'm wearing them.

Yeah, if you sit close to the tank that could be a problem. I sit kind of far back.

I've been debating getting the Bohn armor for a while now - it looks like a pretty nice setup. Maybe when things warm up a bit... Until then it's my FirstGear textiles w/the insulating liner in all the way.

One thing no one ever seems to discuss is how the bulkiness of some solutions affects comfort - the FirstGears are nice, but with long johns and the liner in, they bind and are uncomfortable when my feet are up on the pegs. I'm tall and have aftermarket rearsets for my Speedy 4, so this probably isn't a problem for most, but I have yet to find a totally comfortable solution...

+1
I can't figure out why no one makes just knee pads. that strap on for street.

I bought Tourmasters Venture pants last fall. I have been impressed with TourMasters stuff. The Venture pants were right at $100. They have a waterproof lining that you can take out. They are extremely warm in the cold weather but haven't ridden with them in the summer months yet. We'll see. The only problem so far with them is they are a little work to get them on. But once you got them on they feel fine.
