Jacket with built in or removable armor?

Hi,

I am looking to get a proper motorcycle jacket with armor. I really like the Icon Merc...well and other Icon jackets too. This jacket has removable elbow and shoulder armor. Is removable armor any less protective than built in armor? Also, this jacket has a Dynax nylon chassis but I have always favored leather. Would leather prove to be better protection in the event of a spill or is synthetic just as tough?

Thanks
MC

I appear to have gone through the same process of deciding what to buy just a bit before you did. I ended up getting Belstaff Mercury, which I'm very happy with. It comes with shoulder and elbow armor, and Paul @British Motorcycle Gear told me the magic word to say to get back armor thrown in free (worth about USD44). Great jacket, and British Motorcycle Gear was very helpful.

I'm not really sure about your questions, but I'd think that the synthetic would do better than the leather (I hope!). Good luck finding a jacket you like.
