"No one ever died from road rash...."
What I thought were words of wisdom from a buddy of mine who wore t-shirts on his motorcycle from time to time...then I crashed my bicycle at 20mph (I don't wear leathers on a bicycle ). I can't imagine the rash resulting from a crash at motorcycle speeds. If you haven't experienced it...it ain't pleasant! Wear your gear!

Well - I have been wearing First Gear Mesh-Tek jacket & pants religiously since I recovered from my wreck in 03. The next time I go down ( which I consider to be an inevitability), I hope the gear will moderate the injuries. I'm counting on it. For those of you who may be on the fence regarding to wear or not to wear, consider your self ( or your SO) in the condition pictured below. This as a result of sliding in T shirt & jeans. That elbow was ground down to the bone. I have posted this picture before, and was roundly criticized by some who thought it was too graphic and inflammatory. Too bad. This could be you or your SO, and I can tell you that when you are lying on the gurney in the trauma center and a med tech is scrubbing the debris from your wounds with soapy antiseptic and a toothbrush while you are shaking from the pain, you will become a believer as I have. So I consider this message a public service, and will continue to post the picture occasionally for the benefit of the newbie's.

I was water skiing when a young man trying to impress the ladies and spray the competition at the same time. Came off the end of a whip heading for the beach at 35 or so mph and thought I'd just spray everyone and then turn in time to avoid collecting the sand. Wrong.
I misjudged the whole thing, knocked myself ass-over-tea-kettle, and dug a trench with my face for about 10 yards. When I came to, I hurt like hell, and found myself in the back of a station wagon headed to the hospital to be scrubbed with Physohex and a stiff brush. Know exactly how the pic above feels.

Here in SoCal where the weather is warm.....you see way to many riders in tee shirts, shorts, flip-flops and no gloves........but they got that manditory helmet on.
Same old story.....won't happen to me.
What really sucks is when these guys take unsuspecting girl friends for a joy ride on their sportbike and when they go down.......the poor girl is scared sometimes for life....just because some idiot guy told her "it's ok...I never wear safety gear"

We're all indulging in the most dangerous activity of all, life - it comes with a 100% certainty of death, whether we wear the gear or not.
Taking sensible precautions against reasonably predictable events involving known unpleasant consequences is not stupid.

ATGATT Period.
There's no excuse for riding in a t-shirt, even in very hot weather.
You can get a mesh jacket with armor that'll keep you just as comfortable, maybe more so. And it'll save your hide & bones.
I'll tell you what else, based on the bruises on that guy in Racker's picture he is probably lucky he didn't break his hip too. Imagine how much that would suck!
Solution? Mesh riding pants with knee & hip armor.
Rant over. Ride safe guys.
