Going down in gas stations

No not the price of petrol, but slippery floors in gas stations.

Over time I've read about a number of guys on this site commenting on dropping their bikes whilst entering gas stations, particularly on wet days.

It must be universal that gas stations appear to have shiny concrete floors, a few times I have noticed here that even with rubber soled bike boots some floors are unnaturally slippy when wet.

However the only time it has happened to me, about 2 years ago, I dropped my TB at zero speed inside a garage area, it wasn't even wet. I wasn't going for gas, but to get a 6 monthly government bike check certificate (Warrant of Fitness). I was totally surprised it happened but clunked my head hard (still had my helmet on) and busted my shoulder (despite an armoured jacket). Busted my r/h indicator so it didn't get the WOF.

Anyone had any personal experience with gas station floors ?

I thought this thread was about something else when I read the title.

That being said, I have noticed that the floors seem to be slick. The only thing I can think of, is that the floors are that kind of concrete to keep spilled gas from seeping into the ground. Of course that would imply that they actually clean up the spills in a timely manner. Knock on wood, but I haven't dropped my bike yet, just a few oh crap moments.

gas station ettiquet

Firstly assume every bit of pavement in a station is slippery, secondly, stay away from the center or middle area next to the pumps, it's loaded with oil, tranny fluid and water dripping off air conditioner drain tubes in most cars.
Try to get into the outside wheel tracks, these are generally less slippery and have fewer contaminates on them.
When pulling out, go veeerryy slowly, don't turn sharply(which may be difficult) if you can help it, that is, when you pull in, don't face the store side, face the exit side towards the road. You will lessen your chances of hitting slippery areas.
Don't get out on the highway and goose it, leave slowly and give those tires time to get all the goop off them.
When at home, keep a six gallon can of your favorite blend and simply refill from that, eliminate at least one stop at a station around your area. Of course you can't do that when travelling.
Additionally, use the two outside pumps, they get fewer cars since most cagers will park in the center so they don't have to walk so far to go pee, buy coffee and stuff.
Hope this helps some of ya....I've never had a problem at a station but have seen 6 or7 spills caused by inattentive drivers. It can happen.

Nothing scarier then seeing those rainbows on the wet pavement.
