I could be wrong but in California I believe the reason lane splitting was initially allowed was for air cooled motorcycles that cannot sit in traffic for long periods without damage to the engine. I know that was my primary motivation, the Triumph is a great bike but it doesn't like to be overheated any more than my Harley. While you are splitting a lane you have to be attentive at all times and there's no place for arrogance if you ask me.

Lane splitting has always been legal in CA and it has nothing to do with air-cooled bikes. But if it were the case, where’s the law for air-cooled cars? I’d love to drive my VW on the shoulder!

If lane splitting is done in an unsafe manner you will be ticketed. My neighbors a COP and he has ticketed for unsafe splitting.

Below is the QA link from the CHP website.

Can motorcycle riders "split" lanes and ride between other vehicles?
Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner.

One of the reasons given by traffic police for allowing lane-splitting here is that motorcycles are more difficult to handle in bumper to bumper stop/go traffic.

Amen to this. Inhaling those fumes is really bad.

Do not try lane splitting if you have a sidecar attached to your motorcycle.

Ask me how I know.

He's not going to tell you but he used to have a Ural outfit and clipped the rear of a vehicle changing lanes.

Busted his leg and his ego !

His leg is now healed !

I lane split generally. That's why I commute on a bike...
I avoid doing it near toll-booths or in tunnels as drivers are more likely to make quick, last minute lane changes. I find it interesting that it is a law that varies from state to state. In NY i was able to get out of a ticket by saying, "It's legal in CA..." Luckily i still had my CA DL at the time.
Generally, I'd say its as safe as the rider makes it. Using good judgement, there nothing more dangerous than riding normally.
my 2cents...
