Practice Helps

jj,
I know what you mean. When I started back out, I only did daylight riding. The thought of dodging critters in the dark between here & Gainesville made me very nervous.
I started riding to work this summer when it was starting to get light as I left. Then as the days got shorter, I was eased int riding in the dark. Now, its coming home in the dark.
I started playing games while riding during the day such as "miss the spot". At speed pick a spot on the road and as you get to it, do the countersteer dodge to make the bike shift to the side and miss it. If you run over it, no harm - no foul. The more you play this game, the better you get and can safely miss obstacles in the road. An added benefit is that others on the road think you're crazy, swerving all over the road, and give you plenty of room!!
The other (when no other traffic around) is to practice quick, urgent, and panic stops. I'm still working on this one.

Hope this helps.

I use the same techinque as Little Joe-using the car infront of you, headlights. Also I slightly weave when approaching a intersection, so the car waiting to turn will realize I am a motorcycle.

While riding through Chattanoga late one night...
I was using the headlights of the car in front of me for distant vision. Out of nowhere, the car in front of me hit a "wooden pallet".
I never saw the thing in the road until it was splintered into a thousand pieces flying past the car's headlights. I was peppered with toothpicks! but luckily not clobered with a 2x4!
No damage to bike or me, but I needed new underwear.

Mark
