Paint tire idea? Dumb or not?

Ok
Tell me if you think this is a dumb idea.
I was thinking, if you paint a series of strips on the front tire with a spray paint, the tread part not side walls.(of course covering wheel and body etc) I know the paint would wear off quickly on the top of the tread but the low parts would stay. From the front you would see a kind of flashing effect as the tire rotated.
During the day it would give you that extra visibility.
If you used reflective paint it would probably show up at night.
It was just a thought i may give it a go and tell you if i feel i'm more visible. I will know that because people will look at me and think what the f#$@#! has that guy done to his front tire!
But they will see me
Cheers John.

Great Idea maybe? I think the paint would get all dirty and you would lose the effect you intended.

Yes i thought that. I guess it depends on the quality of paint and that it stcks ok and cleans up well with a hose.
Cheers John.

Cheers John.

You also have to keep in mind the tires expand with heat and retract with cold. Not to mention the typical flexing of everyday riding. You would need a very flexible paint, that can take heat as well. But when it's all said and done you're probably only be adding visibility from the side when it's perfectly clean. Might be better off going with reflector tape wrapped around the spokes of your wheel? Or better yet! Get your wheels painted in a nice anodized color, I'm thinking an anodized red would up some visibility.

Two thoughts:

- You'd be advertising to the world how wide your chicken strips are.

- The painted areas are going to retard stiction to the road surface during any significant lean (to a degree, based on how less sticky the paint is than the rubber, and what percentage of the rubber is covered), which is a horrible, horrible thought and what keeps me away from using an automatic chain oiler.
