Tailgaters

So this was brought up in another thread and I thought I’d ask the question how do you deal with tailgaters? Now we all know you’re supposed to actually slow down, but what do you do?

As for me I think I've probably done all of the above at some point in life...

But anymore slowing down seems to make the most sense... Gee does that mean I'm getting old?

I slow down to the point that I've got plenty of breathing room in front of me to stop slow enough not to be eaten by an Escalade.

Careful, increases your chances of getting cut off and sandwiched.

Eh? Someone tailgate me???? What is this, Formula 1? (can't be NASCAR...they always turn LEFT...normally as I'm approaching the intersection....)

I never worry about tailgaters on the rural highways I ride. If they're going faster'n me it's a rarity. Besides, local knowledge allows me to laugh hysterically when they get nailed by the cops. Ya gotta know yer limitations.

Chalk up another vote for deserted roads and a fast bike. It doesn't happen often.

In the rare occasion when I'm in enough traffic that it's an issue, I rely on the three taps on the brake technique. Car or bike, it works pretty well. If they don't get the message, I try again. The final resort (rarely used) is rolling along ten or fifteen miles an hour below the speed limit.

LOL, completely valid method. But that quit working on the interstate in Kansas City about 5 years ago. Everyone seems to drive so damn angry or with their head up their ass while they are texting, eating, putting on make-up, or reading a book...

When I'm driving in town or on calmer roads I still employ this method, but on the interstate they always seem to take it as a personal offense. The triple flash is reserved on these roads for quick stops, hoping the person behind can look up from their book long enough not to kill you.

I usually speed up and put some distance between me and them. I've also been known to pull some spare change out of my pocket and pitch it over my shoulder .

Very rarely have a tailgaiter, most cars aren't fast enough, even doing the legal speed limit you lose cars on corners and twisties but I had one last week on a road I knew was well policed and I was doing 2-3km over the limit (allowed) so I let him pass. There's nothing like offering a piece of bait to trip a trap and keep the hunters busy !

Slow Down

I slow down and force them to pass me! I usually travel at a very fast pace so if I am being tail gated I must not be riding fast enough, so I slow down and let them become my RADAR decoy.
