Mississippi River Adventure (summer '08)

Hi everyone,

I am looking for a riding partner to ride from the headwaters of the Mississippi River to where the river empties into the Gulf of Mexico (or from the Gulf to Headwaters-- either way)

I am an award-winning photojournalist, I teach the same. I have talked to Shawn here at www.triumphrat.net, and he has agreed to let us blog from the road and share what we find along the way. If you are a person with some writing talent and would like to write a little/a lot-- that would be a plus. However writing for the blog is not a required. Primarily, I need a good, easy-going riding partner looking for some adventure.

I will parallel the same basic route as the Great River Road. However, I will stay primarily on the side-roads. For me this is not about getting to the end, it’s about going somewhere. This is not an iron-butt ride. The Great River Road is over 3,000+ miles long, and since I like the roads less traveled, I am sure this will end up being 3,500 plus. I plan on stopping to smell the roses, eat the crawdads, and try the venison sausage along the way, (and photographing it for you all). If I see something, or you see something interesting, we may decide to stop and photograph it. We will not be setting foot (tire) on the interstate except to cross it.

I am looking at approximately 14+ days. A mixture of motels and camping.

Having done some cross country bicycling, there is nothing like getting invited into someone’s house for dinner and pitching a tent in their front yard: That where you really find out what a place is really like.

I am looking to leave sometime between mid-June and mid-July.

If you are easy going and easy to get along with, please contact me at: silvertriumph@gmail.com Please make sure to tell me why you would want to do something this extraordinarily silly.

FYI: I will be riding my '07 Triumph Bonneville.

BTW: If you are indeed a good writer and want to sell this trip as an article for a magazine or newspaper travel section, I have contacts, and you would be welcome to use my photos.

Here is some basic information on the Great River Road:

This will be interesting

June and July from Tennessee on down to the Gulf is going to be super humid and hot. Riding and/or camping is going to be exhausting.

Consider starting at the bottom and going north in mid May to avoid the heat and humidity. May is a great month in South and it would be before hurricane season gets cranked up.

Flying Scott, That's a good point. But if we start in May we will run into snow drifts in Northern Minnesota-, it would still be cold up North.

I am at the mercy of my works schedule (mid June ~ July), but flexible about starting either from North of South.

Good luck. I've been planning to do this same ride all winter.

Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Hey Mode 12, are you going North to South vice versa. I have found a partner who is also a writer and we are going to blog photos and text daily. I think we are going S to N... the story of my life-- against the current.

More likely than not we will! A very beautiful part of the country. We are still formulating our route and I sure there will be a certain amount of "as the wind blows us" to our route making. But, my magic eight ball says "The chances are good."

I got my photojournalism degree down the river at Winona (Minn.) State University.

What an awesome ride

I would really consider it but my 2008 vacation is already accounted for. I'm going to Kathmandu next week and on a 3000 mile mountain cruise with my son this summer.
I think you'd be hard pressed to miss Redwing MN. Home of the best shoes on the planet.
Anyway I'll keep up with the blog though. I'm from right next to Kimmswick MO right on the river. If I'm home I'll try to catch you as you pass though as surely you'll pass by the Arch in STL MO.

Good luck... have an awesome ride
