The tour sounds great, off the beaten track and a chance to see the real Greece with a Greecian as guide, what more could you ask for but to do it on a bike.

Seriously considering it but would prefer to rent a bike, if we ship our own bikes we will be without them for quite some time. Do you know of any bike rental companies in Greece where we could hire a sports bike of some description.

Then on the othehand Simmo's idea of a European tour ain't that daft.

You got me thinking

The only reliable firm I've heard of for motorcycle (as opposed to moped) rentals is this: http://www.motorent.gr/ and they sound expensive. Check them out though.

BTW, I have checked a couple of firms who offer guided bike tours of Greece including one who uses older T bikes. All their tours are oriented towards the typical tourist destinations and stops (i.e. ancient sites) and none have true biking and seeing the real rural Greece as a priority. Too much motorway riding also. Might be a good idea if you're interested in such a 'safe' thing though.

It's funny how there seems to be interest from Aussie guys but no British guys yet. Come on you people, is your idea of a bike tour only limited to a couple of days easy ride in France?

That’s the spirit Niko!!!

I am sure some of the European fiends that lurk and/or spam on this site will eventually step up and decide to tag along with us on the trip.

BTW. I was really glad to meet you in person mate. What are the odds of bumping into eachother at the dealer’s?

As for the color, I was really put off by the bluntness of the Graphite Daytona. I imagine that on the bigger Sprint fairing that bluntness will be even more profound.

Well, in the end I will probably follow our American friends motto “If you’re going to be silly be really silly” and go for a nice Tornado Red one

Or you can go the whole way and have yours re-painted in fluorescent pink
Seriusly though, Tornado Red is a nice colour. I had it on my 99 Sprint and to be honest if that was available when I got my 06 I would have opted for that. Not that I mind the Caspian Blue.

Hi Nikos,

very tempting offer and thanks for the proposal, would love to see the non touristy countyside of Greece, have worked in Athens and Thessaloniki so have done all the tourist stuff although I lived on Samos for nine months which is pretty much the real deal.

Almost every June/July I spend a few weeks around Bologna Italy maybe next year I may just re-arrange travel plans, bit early to committ right now.

BTW I always hire a scooter, big ones, just love em, darting around like a kid on his first BMX don't wear sandels though, wore those with my pushbike on Samos

Regards, Lambo

I am interested in this ride.

I spent last evening planing a route to Ancona (1100 mi, 3-4 days), and a ferry to Patras as suggested (200 Euros return with sleeping accomodation). Have you any experience of these ferries?

My AutoRoute doesn't have road details for the former Yugoslavia countries, but I would like to find an alternative to retracing my outward route to home. Overland via Bulgaria is 2200 mi, 7-9 days!

I would reckon on a 3 weeks event using ferries.

Is there an upper limit to the numbers (accomodation, for example)?

I also need to verify my insurance for any restrictions and check to see I can obtain any roadside assistance cover. Problem is, I have just had an argument with a Polish artic lorry and I do not know the outcome of my claim yet.

Please let me know - PM me for my e-mail addy.

Hi,

Ferrys from Ancona and Venice to Patras are large, fast, reliable and comfortable ships more like cruise ships than your average greek island hopping ferry. I recommend Venice if one wants to spent for time on the ferry and do less miles on the road and Ancona vice-versa. Plese make sure that you book a cabin or a birth otherwise the trip might prove too tiresome and I want you to be fresh and relaxed when landing over in these shores.

Greek people will tend to recommend a greek rather than italian ferry (not out of sauvinism, it is just that we have more experience with them). Here's a convenient site that seems to cover all greek operators:

http://www.greekferries.gr/

ANEK, Minoan and Superfast ferries have a good reputation for the Italy-Greece route.

Return from the north would be recommended through the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia rather than Bulgaria or Albania as going through these two countries might constitute an adventure in itself. I can post more route details and alternatives if needed. There's the faster way through Serbia or the scenic route which covers the Dalmatian coast. In any case you should consider if you will be in the mood for a tough trip after you have spent a few days riding in the Greek mountains. Maybe at that time the comfortable ferry ride to Italy will seem like heaven.

Additional benefit for all EU people is that going through Italy will have you always riding in EU territory, unless you ride through Switzerland, with the benefit of zero border hassles and delays.

Regarding road assistance: This is recommended, most major European companies will have co-operation arrangement with a Greek company (ELPA, Express Service are the two largest). For insurance cover you must have at least a green card for third party insurance but you might opt to contact your insurers for more comprehensive coverage.

Regarding number of participants. We don't know yet if we will have any restrictions. Having said that, more than 6-8 double rooms may become problematic to organise (I'm just an IT consultant not a professional tour operator) and also any more than 10 bikes becomes chaotic in my experience.

It is too early to tell but of course this will be on a first come first served basis.

At a later stage (early next year) when actual bookings will take place I might need to have some confirmation of everybody's travel arrangements (e.g. in the form of copies or scans of ferry tickets for example) just as a minimum guarrantee that you indeed intend to come. My intention is to try and avoid people having to forward to me any kind of advance payment, so if the need arises for any advanced booking fee (which I will try to avoid by travelling in an off season) for lodging there will be two choices: Either me handling it on a trust basis or I bring you into direct contact with the hoteliers to arrange your advance payment whenever possible.

The first priority now is to gather all those who are seriously interested and try to narrow down potential dates and duration. Next will be detailed route planning.
