Anyone use a K&N oil filter? I put one on yesterday when I changed my oil, and I got a very slight weep at the gasket. I'm going to give it a few days and see if it persists, but I'm wondering if the OEM filter seals better.

I put the K&N filter on my bike 1000 miles ago. No leaks or problems whatsoever
did you smear the seal with oil before you put it on? Was it clean of debris? Did you torque it correctly?

Yes, I smeared it. I really didn't inspect the area for debris. I wiped it clean with a shop rag like I did on my previous bikes. Although, as you know, it's hard to get a good look under there on there on these bikes lol. It is possible I overtightened it, since I didn't use my torque wrench. I have one of those analog kinds that you can't read when it's upside down.
Do you think it will seal properly if I back it off a bit and then snug it up, or will I have to replace it (which will suck since the oil is only about 20 hours old)?
It's such a slight weeping that I kept a paper towel under it all night and it was bone dry in the morning. I'll take a closer look at it tonight.

I just meant to inspect the filter seal on the filter for debris, not looking up into the bike.
The oil filter is actually one of the few things I do bother to use the torque wrench on because it is one of those things that should definitely be on tight enough, yet I feel it would be easy to bend the entire filter if you go too tight. If you only warp that thing a fraction it will not seal properly.
Anyway if you loosen it with a bike full of oil and then tighten again be very careful. I don't really know what else you could do for this leak besides that for now.

Well I gave it a quick loosen and tighten. If it still leaks, I'll just kick myself and then change the oil again. Too bad this oil is so pricey!

I took off the filter entirely today. The mating surfaces are fine - no debris or gasket stuck on. I reinstalled it (same filter) and torqued to spec. Still has the same leak. So either (1) the filter is faulty or (2) I somehow damaged the case when removing the old stuck filter. I hope it's the filter!
