Visit to New York (Manhattan)

Hi Guys & Gals

My wife and I are visiting your fair city in October for five days and I wondered if anyone knew where would be the best place to pick up some motorcycle clothing at a reasonable price. I'm looking for a jacket, helmet etc.

I know that Manhattan will be expensive and we don't have the time or knowledge to travel any great distances so... can anyone help??

Cheers the noo

Jock

If you know your size, the best bet is to find the cheapest stuff online and have it sent to a friend. Else, you can always hit the dealerships (depending on whether you like Japanese, British, Italian, etc) in the city as they always carry gear and can sometimes work with you on price if you buy volume.

Jock,
I agree with the 'online' comment. I live in NYC and I bought my jacket and boots online (foxcreekleather - in Virginia) my pants at aerostich (through their website) and my helmet online. Free shipping and no tax is hard for retail stores to compete with...

I understand this is probably about the exchange rate, so you'll do fine wherever you go. Shop online before yo leave and pick the stuff up in person at their retail locations in NYC.

Regards,
Kevin

The exchange rate is in my favour and buying online is an option but I wanted to try the stuff on and to be honest visit a biker shop in NYC as part of the holiday.
I think theres a honda come yamaha dealership on 11th street but I've been unable to find the web address. Theres also a way too expensive biker shop in Manhattan which looks more style than function. So ideas anyone

At a bare minimum, go to the Triumph Ducati NYC dealership on Ave of the Americas and Spring St. They have awesome bikes there and a pretty good (if not pricey merchandise) parts department downstairs. Plus, it's right next to Soho so you can stroll around afterwards.

Also, you can go to the New York City Motorcycle Federation on 6th Ave and Bleecker which is just a couple blocks north of the first store I mentioned.

There are a few really cool shops in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Shoot me an email or PM or whatever when you get stateside and I'll show you around.

you are probably talking about camrod motorsports

it's on 11th avenue at 46th street. this is the website but it's pretty useless
http://www.camrodmotorsports.com/

to be honest I think going there is a waste of time. They don't have a big selection of gear and probably not much leather at all

I would say the same about the gear at triumph ducati nyc. it is pretty lackluster in selection though at least the triumph ducati dealer is right on the west side of soho so you can go to a restaurant nearby or walk around. They do have a lot of bikes to look at. Camrod, on the other hand, is in an industrial area that is ugly as hell and not near anything else

if you are looking for a nice leather jacket there are probably a ton of shops that are not motorcycle specific that you could spend your time and money better in. NYC motorcycle shops leave much to be desired

That's an understatement.

Camrod is terrible - don't waste your time. They recently renovated and now only carry some BS brand of gear. BMW of Manhattan is decent, but you will pay retail without question. The Guzzi/Aprilia shop across the street is tiny and carries a small selection of Dainese and Vanson jackets, no pants, and a handful of gloves (no pun intended!).

The Triumph/Ducati dealer is decent, but nothing special.

I think a dedicated gear shop, like a Cycle Gear, would actually be great in Manhattan.

Thanks for all the info chaps. Looks like I'll try and find a leather shop for the Jacket but I think I'll visit the Triumph Dealer just because its their really.....

I'm also going to the Ear Inn on Tuesday the 20th (bike night?) if anyone fancies a pint.

Anyother avice would be great.

Cheers the noo
