Hello, my name is Mark and I was born and raised up here.As you can see I'm pretty new to this forum. I've driven and ridden the Alaska Hwy many times. If your friend has a lot of money to put his truck on the ferry, drive/ride to Prince Rupert and take it to Haines. Nice 2 day trip. And you don't need to rent a room on the ferry. Just sleep up in the Solarium. Otherwise drive/ride all the way up and save time and money. How much dirt road you hit is a ***** shoot. Last year I hit none on the way down and coming back up I had to drive thru a construction zone in mud that had me worried about getting my van stuck! I did a 10,000+mi trip last year in my minivan with a Ducati 996 and my dog onboard. Rode Deal's gap! Yes! Ya hoo!!!
Tok is the highest lattitude you'll hit and it won't get dark up there in June orJuly! On your way down to Anchorage go to Valdez. Amazing! The Switzerland of AK!
When you get to Los Anchorage realize that it's only 15min outside of AK. LOL But I love it. And Rat Sass, you definately need to come back up to go south from Anchorage because dood, you missed out!!! The Hwy south to Seward and Homer is a designated Senic Byway with lots of twisties!! I never tire of it!
Anyway, anyone headed up here give me a hollar as I love talkin about this place!
