Planning my 'Big Adventure 2008'
Every year I take a long (3000+ miles) trip on my bike. This year my plans are to head north and see what I can see. My trip will take me to Oregon, (Crater Lake) Washington (Mt St Helens and Mt Rainier) British Columbia, (Glacier National Park, Jasper NP, Banff NP) Montana (Glacier NP in the US) Wyoming (Yellowstone and Grand Teton NP) Colorado, Utah Nevada, then back home to the Bay Area in Northern California.
Those are my plans....so far.... If anybody has any ideas of what route I should take, what I just 'have to see' and what roads I cannot miss, please let me know. This is not an 'iron butt' run. I have from June 6th to June 29th. I hope to camp about 15+ days during this trip.

And I hope to complete it on my fully loaded '02 RS this was a warm up trip to Big Sur a few weeks ago

Three weeks! How cool!
Here are a few suggestions:
All of central Oregon and the Columbia River Gorge is like Disneyland, amazing roads to get lost on everywhere you go. If you enjoy a bit of the stout try to stay over at McMinamins Edgefield in Troutdale OR. (www.mcminamins.com). It was the county poor farm that has been restored into a really cool hotel. They converted all of the out-buildings, tool sheds, steam plants, etc. into little pubs. If you do it, try the chocolate stout milkshake! But if you go, you are not going to want to be out on the road afterward.
Then there is the Historic Columbia River Highway with great views of the Gorge and a half dozen or more waterfalls right along the road.
If you want to avoid Seattle (I would recommend it!) I would do both sides of St. Helens, Rainier and then take 12 over to Yakima. Just north of Yakima take the Canyon Road (821) to Ellensberg and then 97 up into Canada.
We expect a report now!

suggestions
Thanks Pablo, I need all the suggestions I can get. Most of my riding has been in Cal and some other western states, never went north. I'll be sure to look up some of your suggestions.

See if you can work in the ride over Lolo Pass on the Idaho/Montana border. It's a couple of hundred miles south of Glacier. Beautiful country and one of the best bike roads ever, following the course of the Lochsa River.

Looks like you're headed for a great ride. Bring some rain gear, just in case!

Regards, Guy

Oregon
Pablo,
I'm taking your suggestion and going to Troutdale on Sunday or Monday June 8th or 9th. I will probably stay at McMinamins. The Chocolate Stout Milkshake has me intrigued! What are some of the good roads to ride from there? I will probably head north from there to Mt St Helens and Mt Rainier, or is Hells Canyon better? Your neck of the woods, you know better. I use Google Maps and there is a box to check to avoid major hwys. I use this so I can find the best moto roads possible. Just to let you know my riding preference. (Twisty ones!)

Thanks again
Bob

Whenever we are down in the Gorge (Sportbike Northwest is held in Stevenson WA the end of August. See www.soundrider.com) we go out to Sandy, turn off onto Ten Eyck Rd, to Bull Run to the Historic Highway but then if you have time go up Larch Mountain Rd to the overlook, Take some walking shoes because at the end of the road you have to hike about a mile up to the overlook. It is worth the walk!
Once you get back to the Historic Highway it will eventually dump you out onto I-84 but after a couple miles get off at Cascade Locks and go across the river (Toll Bridge but it is only .50 for bikes) and then east to Carson. That is where you turn north to get to St. Helens. If you Google a map from Carson to Randle it will show you the route but at about 60 miles take the turn off up to Windy Ridge. It is pretty amazing. The east side of the mountain was stripped bare of all vegetation when the volcano erupted but the way it is coming back to life is interesting to see.
If you have time to see the west side too the ride around the south end is the best route, and the trip is worth it.
ON THE OTHER HAND...
As far as central Oregon goes, pick up "Motorcycle Journeys Through The Pacific Northwest" by Bruce Hansen. He has covered it really well.
We did Hells Canyon last year and it was absolutely amazing. We came south from Pendelton and then east from Baker City through Hells Canyon. It was April and the Wallowa Mountain Loop Rd was still closed with snow so I am planning on going back over this September. If you do this ride go to Oxbow and then down river to the Hells Canyon Dam. It's about 20 miles on a little two lane road that is very nicely paved... with no guard rails. At one point I am cruising along about 20 feet above the level of the lake. I start blasting the twisties and the next time I look over it is a thousand foot drop to the water!
Anyway, the best way north from there is the Wallowa Loop Rd to Joseph, then Enterprise, take Highway 3 up to Clarkston WA. Highway 3 is kind of dull until you get about 5 miles from the WA border. That is when you start down into Rattle Snake Canyon. Part way down into the canyon you cross the state line. Notice the change in road engineering. It is very interesting.
From Clarkston / Lewiston you can take Highway 12 up over Lolo Pass (Make sure you stop outside Kooskia ID and get a picture of your bike next to the "Windy Road Next 75 Miles" sign) to Missoula, then up to Glacier. (Do the east side of Flathead Lake) It just goes on and on and on...

GP, Pablo is doing a good job here of setting you up.

Definitely take his recommended route from Carson up to Randle. You can take a side trip while on Mt St Helens to Spirit Lake and then return to your route.
