As far as the triple is concerned I picked up the largest size tank and tail bag as well as the probably pointless flyscreen and a gel seat. I rode the triple all last season but this will be my first long trip on it. I have never had the flyscreen on, but I expect very little wind protection.
I will be leaving on May 8 and have 17 days to get lost. I will be riding through unknown territory as soon as I clear St. Louis. Any advice on places to hit in Arkansas, Texas, and spots enroute (roads, hotels, bars etc) be greatly appreciated.
Never having been to Texas, I am currently thinking of heading to Padre Island, staying about 4 days then riding back. This is going to be an adventure as I know none of the territory, so feedback is appreciated.

If you go thru Ft. Worth, stop by a place called Angelo's for some good barbeque. You will be going south on I 35, exit W. Belknap and go west (right), about 1-1/2 miles turn north (right) on Henderson then west (left) on White Settlement Rd. It's about 1/2 mile up on the left. 2533 White Settlement Rd.
Then there's Billy Bob's... The world's largest honky tonk...
http://www.billybobstexas.com/ There is a small rodeo arena and a stage for concerts inside (among other things). It was made in one of the old Swift packing house buildings. From Angelo's, retrace your steps to Belknap and go back into downtown. At the courthouse (which you might recognize from Walker, Texas Ranger as their headquarters building)), turn north on N Main, go about 2 miles to Exchange St. It's just a little past Exchange. Look right after you pass Exchange and you can't miss it. 2320 Rodeo Plaza.
In Waco, about 130 miles past Ft. Worth on I 35, there is the Texas Ranger's museum on the side of the highway. You can't miss it. It's at I 35 and University Parks Dr. on the north-bound side.
The Dr. Pepper museum is in Waco also. 300 S. 5th St.
Now we work our way down I 35 to Austin. The Capitol building is a must see. It's larger than the US capitol building and is built with native granite. The rotunda is awe inspiring. If you spend the night in Austin, 6th street is where the party is (don't go in bars on 5th st though or you will meet men of the opposite persuasion). Also, if you are there right at dusk, go to the Congress St. bridge to see bats swarm out from under on their nightly swaree.
A little farther south on I 35 is San Antonio. The Alamo is in the middle of downtown now and just a tourist trap but its a nice visit. The riverwalk is near there too. Lots of signs pointing direction or just stop and ask.
If your butt isn't tired by the time you get to San Antonio, go to Leakey and ride the 3 twisted sisters SH 335, 336 and 337. It's a 100 mile scenic route thru canyons. Be careful because there are deer and other critters everywhere. After you ride the sisters and you hear someone tell you Texas is all straight roads, you will just lean back and smile.

Padre Island is best at spring break (if you like to look at 1/2 naked drunk college age women) but any time is good.
If you make it down to Corpus Christi, the Texas State Aquarium is there... definitely worth a stop.
When you asked this question, I bet you didn't realize you would be getting a Texas travel brochure.
If you bring a laptop, pm me here or on yahoo (duckman00114) and if I can spare the time away from work, I'll meet up with you in Austin or San Antonio. There are lots of good people on rat.net in Texas. Most hang out in the twins forum. Just send out a call and I'm sure one of us will show you some other things.
