I took a canoe down the Buller River, in the mid '70's, with a Kiwi mate. We spent 3mths building a canoe in Christchurch. Taught ourselves the basics in the gentle old Avon (which is more of a ditch than a river). Then headed off to the west coast.
Little wonder that we only lasted about 3-4 miles before holing the canoe on a rock, in whitewater. But that 3-4 miles was one of the scariest 15 minutes of my life. I can still remember every terrifying second.
Thanks for bringing it back Tbirdnz.

BTW Is the old road that got wrecked in the '68 earthquake, still visible. That's a scary piece of archeological history. The road just drops 50-60 ft in places. That's one place i would not like to be in a serious earthquake.

Spotted 30 of these old Bentleys near Wanaka, they were on a tour of the South Island. Shipped all the way from the UK. They were either all green or all blue. This one's from 1926.

Visited Burt Munro's 'museum' which is in a hardware store in Invercargill.

A scenic shot of the Kaikoura coastline.

This shot above is on the Catlin coast, not a good shot, those blobs on the right are sea lions.

Tbirdnz,
Thanks for sharing those pics. Mother Nature at her best. The great thing about a trip like that is no one can take it away from you after you've completed it. It's part of you from now on.

As the others said, keep 'em coming!

Another shot of Burt Munro's bikes hidesert. The owner who owns the hardware store says he's had them since 1976. There were 5 Indians there, but this is the one he raced and a prototype.

Just to show that NZ is not just all scenery here's some town shots of old buildings, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill have retained a lot of their old colonial buildings whereas Auckland have demolished most of them.

Dunedin's town hall.

The Press, one of the South Islands daily newspaper HQ, still in use.

....and the guy that started it all for the British, Captain James Cook, standing in a Christchurch Park.

Sorry TBA I tried to keep away from golf courses, I've one just next to me !

Yes Old Scratch that old Buller road still exists, you've actually answered a question. I wondered what that section of road was doing down there in the gully, now I know it was the result of an earthquake !

There's no way I can show all or even a number of these pics. The thread is getting too big especially for those on dial-up, so this will be the end of this one. Probably will introduce a few more at appropriate times in other's threads.

Tb,
Create a photo album either on TriumphRAT.net or join photobucket.com and load a bunch of them there and provide a link for us to view them. It's free and easy.

Well these above are photobucket archives dayton, but maybe I'm just trying to promote tourism and trying to get you all to visit NZ and see for yourself !

Ok, here's one more.

Seals at Milford Sound, now that's one place everyone should visit before they go to the second best place in the universe ! NZ is locally known as Godzone !
