Breakfast Run
The Sunday morning breakfast run is a decades old tradition in South Africa. We live at about 5,500 ft asl in the centre of a landmass with Pretoria, the capital, about 65km to the north. This is African savannah, known locally as the highveld, and it has a reputation for being flat & featureless, but this is not entirely true as I hope I'll demonstrate. The favoured riding area is to the west of Pretoria around a place called Hartbeespoort Dam (known simply as Harties).

I'll start off with a pic of Johannesburg City Centre. It's on a ridge and on a clear day can be seen from afar.

Heading out of the northern suburbs I use part of my daily work commuting route

About 40 minutes later the Dam comes in to view

More pics of the Dam

The mountains are the Magaliesberg range & it's one of the oldest mountain ranges, believed to date back 2 billion years

One more for luck

I then normally travel through a mountain valley. This is quite scenic and fertile & there are beef cattle, citrus fruit & root vegetable farms. There's also a second dam, which is also a boating & picnic resort.

The road past here is very remote & I can quite often ride for more than 5 minutes at a time without seeing another vehicle

I often end up in this sleepy one road town. But it's got 5 or 6 decent places to eat, all of which are biker friendly

This was last Sunday. I pulled in to a coffee shop & parked next to 3 other Sprint STs- we're becoming common

On the way home I go through the Cradle of Humankind, a world heritage site, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cradle_of_Humankind . The road is nice

Other sights along the way

Looking south towards Joburg

And then back in to the suburbs. This is the area where I live

I hope this gives some idea of what we have to enjoy on some of our local rides. I may add a couple of extra pics in the weeks ahead.

Enjoy your Sunday runs, wherever you may be, & stay safe.

DaveB.

That is a pretty country. I like the Rhino crossing sign...I think I would freak out if I see a Rhino crossing the road while riding my bike.

Hi gonzo. Glad you liked it. It's not right to split hairs on this forum, but it's actually a hippo . Yeah, we get rhinos too.

What -- they're different species??? I always thought a rhino was just a horny hippo!

Guess I gotta spend more time at the zoo!
