The Sunday morning breakfast run is a decades old tradition in South Africa. We live at about 5,500 ft asl in the centre of a landmass with Pretoria, the capital, about 65km to the north. This is African savannah, known locally as the
highveld, and it has a reputation for being flat & featureless, but this is not entirely true as I hope I'll demonstrate. The favoured riding area is to the west of Pretoria around a place called Hartbeespoort Dam (known simply as Harties).
I'll start off with a pic of Johannesburg City Centre. It's on a ridge and on a clear day can be seen from afar.
Heading out of the northern suburbs I use part of my daily work commuting route
About 40 minutes later the Dam comes in to view
