Thumbs up SF to Humboldt County, CA

So the rest of our family scattered for Thanksgiving, and my husband, 11 year old daughter and I decided to take a road trip - on motorcycles. I'd had the Bonnie (my first motorcycle, though I did have a Vespa for a while) for about a month, and had put about 700 miles on it, so this was going to be a real step up for me! Our daughter would ride with my husband on his Buell, because I'm not quite ready for a passenger yet!

From Marin County, We rode north on Highway 1 up the coast to the Benbow Inn. http://www.benbowinn.com/hotel.htm This is a beautiful old inn - great kitchen as well, which is key!

I'm a road cyclist (bicycles, not motorcycles), and many of the roads we rode up I've ridden many times on the bike, which was fun and makes them a lot easier on the motorcycle because you get to know the roads so well riding them repeatedly on a bike. North of Stewarts Point, the route became less familiar. This is just great curvy terrain - beautiful scenery, good road conditions, and very little traffic.

I was definitely happy to reach our destination as it started to get quite cold as the sun went down:

Here's DD and me on my bike hanging out in the parking lot. (Of course, we weren't actually riding with no helmets, just walking around the hotel and in the parking lot). The Buell is in the background.

On Thanksgiving, we took a ride to Shelter Cove, which was beautiful. The road that goes there is very steep, and climbs a couple of ridges. At the coast, there are tide pools and a lighthouse.

Friday we came home. We rode my favorite road anywhere - Highway 128 from the coast to Cloverdale (I also love it as it continues east as well.) This road was part of a 600k bike ride I did last year and it was fun to see it again - in daylight!

Here is the family on bikes overlooking the ocean.

All in all a very different sort of trip. I'm definitely feeling more and more comfortable with the Bonnie. This trip really helped!

That's great stuff - I hope my wife decides to take up riding herself someday - although she's a great passenger!

Is the Bonnie your first bike?

Thanks for sharing the photos & story. I like those twisty roads on California's coast. Rode them a bit in the early 1980's when I lived in California.

Regards, Guy

Hi Guy -

Yeah, the Bonnie is basically my first bike. I did have a Vespa for a few months. It's been a lot of fun.

I ride road bicycles a lot and used to race, so that and motorcycling are very complimentary.

I'm sure your wife would love a Bonnie!

We can pick up '07 green Bonnevilles fairly cheap down here. I am seriously considering one. How do you like yours? What kind of mpg do you get? What is the range between fill ups? Did you have the air injectors removed? Any problems with the bike?

Thanks in advance.

Great Ride

Even I am envious of your ride, from a SoCaler. Always good to see quality family time together.

Never raced, but I pedal at least a couple of "century" rides most years and get a lot of miles in on the 20 year old Cannondale road bike. Around here, many dirt roads lead off into the surrounding hills and canyons, so the mountain bike gets a lot of use too. Agree - bicycling and motorcycling share some of the same skills, and offer some of the same rewards. My youngest son is a 16 year old bicycle nut and likes to show off that he can out-climb dear old Dad. Well, it hasn't quite worked yet, but he's gaining on me...

Regards, Guy
