Great memories! I spent 5 weeks in QLD on a Rotary trip in 2004. We went from Hamilton Island to Pt Douglas, mostly on the coast but did the Tablelands and Kuranda. Rotary International wouldn't allow us to drive, so I just thought about all there was to do when I get back. Townsville felt just like Tucson in the 60's, I felt like I was reliving my teen years. It was also in Oz where I fell in love with the Tiger. I got the Tiger, now I just have to get back to see me mates!

I'm from Townsville and have been on the rest of the roads you described. You sure have some good ranges up there and I'm extremely jealous.

Interesting to read about the Quaid road. I don't think I will be getting there any time soon on my Sprint ST.

We have a range or two down here but not the good quality roads up them like you have. Yours have a lane in each direction while ours are just downright scary meeting a caravan coming the other way.

Enjoy the rides.

Sorry Scratch, but I missed this when you first posted it. Nice pics, good roads and wonderful scenery! Please just take it a bit easy when you go there on your new Street Triple!

Ride On
Scratch

BTW DaveB. The Street's rock solid on all of them roads (except the dirt ones, & the Quaide, which it can't get to). It absolutely loves Gentle Annie, & I could spend all day riding that bit of bitumen.

Yep. The SuperScram's been getting very dirty lately.
& aquitting itself remarkably well too.

This is pretty thick scrub, to thrash a big bike like this through.
& SuperScram did it like a trials bike.

For the all bitumen loops, my Street Triple's the better choice. It's quicker, with better brakes, & is a lot more fun to ride through the twisties (& way faster)
Here's a Wet Season shot of her on the Gillies Range, next to one of the thousands of waterfalls that cascade down the mountain at that time of year.

The SuperScram's no slouch though. It's still fun on the ranges, but requires a different (read: slower) riding style. & it's still the bike to choose if the road's anything less than perfect (especially as I'm still waiting for the Street's recalled shocky replacement)

I've been filming my rides lately, so here are a few vids of the range roads.
The first one is on my Scrambler (now called the SuperScram since it's engine mods) going up the Gillies Range Rd.

The descent of the Gillies is on my Street Triple 675

& here's the Street on the Rex Range.

Old Scratcher, I'm coming back! I got some insurance compo for my mototcycle accident 15 months ago, and the wife didn't think buying more motorcycles was the thing to do with the money. I cut her a deal. I'm coming to QLD to ride in the Postie Bike Challenge http://www.postiebikechallenge.org/ in September, and mates in Townsville are showing my wife the beauty of the North while I'm on the road for 11 days. I have a 1968 CT90, a Pony Express Postie Bike to practice on. It's a bit easier to throw about than my big yellow Tiger! I expect heaps of praise and respect when I finish in Cairns. Will you be there?
