I'm thinking of riding round-trip to Alaska from Pittsburgh PA in early July. I'm in the researching stage of this monumental trip and promised my wife I would post on this forum to see if anyone wants to ride along.
None of my local friends who ride seem interested. If anyone has tips or advice for getting to Alaska, I'm listening.

Thanky. Thankyvermuch.

I have to say that it sounds like the trip of a lifetime and would be an amazing adventure.

I'd like to do it but I don't think work or wife would do without me for the 2 weeks.

I hope you find someone to do the ride so we can all see the pictures.

I am hoping to ride out either in 2008 or 2009. Have a great trip!

Go generally northwest until you find the last paved road then keep going until you run out of road. :-D

But seriously it's an exceptional trip. I did it alone a few years ago when I took off for a couple of months and had a fantastic time. No schedules, no one else's bike breaking down, no reservations, just me, the bike, my camping gear and a road atlas. Come to think of it I *really* want to go again....

As far as advice goes: put sealant in your tires before you go, there's plenty of gas, don't ever let a Harley shop fix your broken clutch cable, the roads are generally good but expect a few miles of muddy slush here and there, moose will *not* move quickly out of your way (or anywhere else for that matter), elk will chase motorcycles, if you round a curve in the Yukon only to see a pickup stopped in the road ahead with a bear on top of it be quick with the camera or you'll miss your shot, say "hi" to the crew at Skully's Burl Bar for me ... and ask them where in the hell I went with them for the week following that evening as it's all a bit fuzzy to me, if you really want to get a feel for the distance take out a map and figure out at what point during your trip you'll be closer to Russia than home, don't let the wife read any of this or you'll never make it to Canada much less Alaska.... :-D

I'd like to go, but I have work scheduling issues.

I did want to mention that there was a guy that I saw on the internet. this man took an 85 Honda Shadow 750 from St. Louis to the Arctic Circle and back in something like 4 days. He had someone take a picture of him at the Welcome to the Artic Circle sign. Him and his bike looked like it went through hell and high water to get there.

Good luck, be safe and have plenty of fun.

Thanks for the good suggestions! Planning continues, but there is always the possibility work issues could prevent the trip. It may come down to deciding if I can do it on a pure street bike with street tires.

Regardless, I posted here so I can honestly say to my wife "Look - I tried, nobody wants to go so I will make the trip on my own."

This site is good for so many things!

This sounds like something I would love to do. But unfortunatly i've already booked an European trip for this year.

Alaska is next year for me.. or maybe mexico.

Yes, absolutely ... and likely without any real difficulty. Heck I even ran into a guy from NY at Scully's Burl Bar (YT) who had made it that far on a 40+ year old Guzzi that looked as if it were about to fall apart. Then again he did tell me that if / when it died he was going to leave it in a ditch and hitchike back to the states. :-D
