I am lucky enough to live between Blowing Rock and Boone and just 1 mile from the Parkway....I ride it at least 2 or 3 times a week!! North or South of me it's great riding. Many other great roads in Western NC too but don't spread it around too much!!! In the 20 years I have been here I've seen lots of changes but it is still the best place I've ever lived...especially for riding!!

I like to camp and ride too, did MT and WY last year and am planning a June southern Utah trip now ( any advice??). The Parkway is great for camping too...very few RVs!! Down near Deals Gap is the Cherohala Skyway too don't miss it if you're down that way.

If any of you get over this way drop me a line and we'll ride'em...especially you southwestern guys. I'm up for swapping ride info on a NC to Utah trip!!!!

Harry

Deals Gap is an excellent ride everyone should experience at least once. Just go in the middle of week to avoid the crowds. 58 from Independence to Damascus VA is also a nice road and a lot less traveled. 16 from the bottom of WV south is about as twisted as anyone would like. Don't try it if you get seasick! The off camber switch backs are a handful on a loaded touring bike. You've been warned...

I almost forgot! I second the nomination on the Suches ride south from Robbinsvile NC into northern GA. It's a little high on traffic but the roads through the mountains and parks are sublime! We make it a day ride there and back but we ride fast and pass the traffic like it's standing still...keep up or maybe plan on spending the night at the cycle only campgrounds in Suches. The campground is the only thing there other than a quick mart so if you want anything special bring it with you!

Don't forget to buzz up to Mt. Mitchell on the BRPkwy between Asheville and Blowing Rock. Quite a climb. It's the highest mountain east of the Mississippi. Funny how some of those roads can play tricks on you. Sometimes you think you're going up or down, but no--you can lose a lot of perspective. Gotta pay attention to the seat of your pants.
