This weekend I was on Interstates 70, 68 & 79 in MD & WV by car and thought the area would be great for a motorcycle ride.

Can anyone recommend some good riding routes down that way?

I grew up in Charleston WVa and we traveled to Lynchburg Va to visit relatives. There were no interstates then and the "Million Dollar A Mile" WVa Turnpike was being built when I was in the third grade. Back then the mountain roads had few guard rails and fewer painted lines. Charleston to Lynchburg was an 8 hour drive through Gauley Bridge, Hawks Nest Overlook (above New River Gorge), White Sulphur Springs and others in my dad's 49 Pontiac. No white water rafting, bungee jumping, mountain biking or ski lodges, but lots of hunting and fishing. I hope you have an exciting time riding the roads there. I would love to go back and ride the back roads and its in my plans.

That didn't answer your question, but you triggered some memories for me.

Try Pocahontas County in eastern West Virginia. You can pick up a flier off any Tourist board that will give you 4-6 great motorcycle day rides to enjoy!

Remember -- Almost Heaven! West Virginia! And they may not be far from right with that slogan!

The Honorable Senator Byrd attaches road pork to every bill that passes over his desk. As a result WV has some of the best roads in the country. Many of them go from nowhere to nowhere. It is motorcycle heaven Try the Senica Rocks area. Find the ones that go over mountains. I've been on some that are like a shorter Deals gap.

Its been a while since I've been back & can't recall the road #'s off the top of my head, but I do remember the town names. Find a little town called Philippi, and find your way to Parsons, then Thomas, Davis, Canaan Valley, & down to Seneca Rocks. Stop by the "Front Porch" for a quick bite & drink if you want. If you've got a Tiger you might even try to make it up Spruce Knob

I'm organizing the "West Virginia RAT Gathering" again this year. It's hosted at Canaan Valley Resort near Davis, WV. I ride in northern and central WV all the time and get into southern WV on overnighters. Just simply awesome riding.

The short answer for "Must Do" roads is:

33 east of Elkins into Virginia and 33 west of I-79

50 between Grafton and Romney

219 from PA border to beyond Marlington (south of Elkins gets bland though)

250 anywhere except the section from Fairmont to where it breaks off of 219 near Mingo. It's great near the southwest corner of PA (Moundsville to Hundred) and great in Virginia east of Monterey.

20 is excellent from Buckhannon to Webster Springs

15 is very nice from 219 west to Webster Springs

42 from Mt Storm/jct 50 south to Petersburg

The list goes on and on and on...

It is hard to go wrong in WV. My parents were from there and I can remember summer trips (by car) from south Mississippi to Buckhannon WV. A couple of my uncles have cabins in the Sago area where we went for family reunions. A couple years ago I had the chance to take my bike on a business trip (took 3 days b4 and 4 days after the conference to ride) and it was as beautiful as I remembered. I have been through parts here and there b4 and since, but never simply focused on riding in WV b4 that trip. Would do it several times a year if possible.

Oh... You can make it to Spruce Knob without a Tiger. :-D
