My wife and I 'discovered' a Best Western at I-75, exit 60. They offer a biker discount, covered parking (ok, the area under the check in covers), a table of wipe down rags (if that is important to you) and polish/cleaner. Works for me! Room was good, rate okay. This is the exit for the Cherohola and near the Dragon, etc. Other things near by. http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/propertyMapWeather.do?propertyCode=43139&group=fal se&disablenav=false#null[addsig]

I just stayed at the Topaco lodge this past Monday. I would gladly recommend them to anyone.

You can find them on the Dragon website.

Another great spot is the

Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge

They have cabins as well as camping spots, all on a nice babbling creek. They are also off road so that there is not traffic noise or noise from the nieghbors...

I stayed at Fontana Village this week. It's only a few miles from the start of the Tail of the Dragon, so for starting out in the morning to do some early riding before the crowds arrive, it can't be beaten.

Food is the only problem, as getting a decent meal is an issue due to the remoteness of the area. Everything at Fontana closes up a bit too early during the week.

However, I think renting a cabin as a group might be a good deal, since I believe they have fridges and such. There is a biker's discount, too. The place has real potentail, and its on an upgrade path, so I'm planning to send them a letter concerning areas of needed improvement.

Here's a link to their site:

I camped at the Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge for week & I would highly recommend it . The food wuz tasty & inexpensive & the staff were just wonderful . Also I enjoyed the nightly campfire talks with other riders ( especially Triumph riders ) . My only problem wuz I could not stay longer .

The Iron Horse is indeed a neat place to stay... A bit remote, but it's "self contained" and definately motorcycle orientated... Tooties, or as it is now called, The Stecoah Diner has good food too.

In Robbinsville I've stayed at both the SanRan and Phillips motels. They are "ecletic" family run places that are clean and inexpensive...

There is also something kind of cool about staying at the Gap Resort... It's best when done with a group though!

For folks on the west side of the area, there is the Cherohala Motorcycle Campground. Their website looks good. Though I haven't stayed there...

If you find yourself farther east on NC hwy. 276 try the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground in Cruso (near the intersection of 276/BRP)... Another great place...

You could go over the Foothills Pky to Townsend. There are a few motels over there. From Townsend, you can go over to Pigeon Forge with dozens and dozens of motels, etc. however that is taking you farther from the Gap/Skyway.
