Guys, I hit the dogtired trifecta this year. Rode the Tiger to Wisconsin this Spring and dog was there for the Slimey Crud Run, along with some great fellow T-rat folks. Then I rode to New Mexico in Sept. for Triumphs in Taos, and dog and jonk and all these other legendary folks were there. Then dog and I burned up the Interstate slab through New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ky. My fortune cookie fortune said and I quote: "Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter." It surely did. And dog visited my secret mystery garage motorcycle shrine and crashed at my place for a couple days. Chook and scotch! Hell yeah! Then I rode to Alabama last month for Barber Vintage Days and dog was there too along with another set of fine folks. Each one of these epic rides (for an old man) had the one common theme of getting to hang out with dog. I'm tellin' ya right now he's the finest kind, and the real deal. I believe "chuffed" is the appropriate expression concerning what all this was like for me. It's got me thinking about what to do for an encore next year.

Might have to start a thread about what a great motorcycle year this was for me, and further report on all the wonderful people I met just on this continent.

Oh yeah, one more thing... Jonk owes me a beer. The bastard. I may need to visit Oz to collect.

Your friend Nort.

I know this isn't unique to me, but since meeting folks at Irish's, I "hear" their posts in their voices. I didn't so much as read Nort's post above but heard it.

It's weird.

That's not weird. What's weird is the voice I "hear" your posts in!

Man, somebody should do something about that guy!

I had the pleasure of riding with Jonk and Dog as well as Cat out to Taos (and what do you know - I met Nort there as well) so I can only agree - a great bunch of guys I'd be glad to host any time!

My first real huge smile riding with Dog came in VT. We were on a rather slow tour and taking a break. When we headed back to the bikes I told Denis, just take off when you're ready, I'm right behind you. He left the pack within the first mile and I was right behind along with....damn, I forgot your name. The three of us had a blast the rest of the day. Then I got to show him the way from the Smokies to NY...through WV. Denis picked the best damn roads. Good times mate and although I never ride with company yours was certainly appreciated. Seeing you light up in those WV twisties, good stuff. We'll be riding together again, no doubt, don't dawdle getting back here...ok?

This entire Zen Journey by dogtired should be on the Travel Channel and called "Riding With The Dog".

I read your post HAP and, I understand what you are saying. Most people who 'deride' the USA have never been there and never met the average American (of the USA).

'Yanks' (as we were always prone to call Y'all since the days when there were thousands of US Servicemen (and no doubt some women) posted in Australia during WW2)....have alway been friends of 'Aussies' and there are now American Servicemen stationed back in Australia (Darwin) and they do major Ship Crew change-overs in Western Australia. There are those who see America as the 'Big Bad Boy' but I always ask those people who they would rather have as the Worlds Top Power...and usually get little or no response.

Anyway, I have known several people who had once said they would never go to the USA (because they see at as what they see on TV shows) and have since visited and loved the place....

I first met some 'Yanks' when I did a Tour of Duty in Vietnam with the Australian regular Army and was fascinated to meet US Servicemen and Women, and having got back to Australia safely had always wanted to visit the USA. I was finally able to Visit and Ride there in '93 for 6 weeks and had a sensational time being hosted by a couple from SoCal, who also 'Lent' me and my wife his BMW R100RT for our 6 weeks touring the Western States...and we spent some time with them at their home as well....Awesome.....and although the offer was made for 'reciprocation' it hasn't come about.

My last visit/ride was for 7 weeks in 2009 and once again had a great time...being treated well by all and hosted by a group of Wisconsin Vets during the Memorial Weekend in DC...we all stayed in a Motel near Andrews Air Base....

Those two visits are 'indelibly' printed as 'cherished memories' in the old Brain Box!

I have friends there who I started talking to on 'forums' many years ago and have since met and wish I could see on a regular basis, but it's cost prohibitive these days as I am now retired on an Army Pension....but just one small Lotto Win and I'll be straight back.

I hope (before I get too old) that I can return the favour to one of your travellers....although not too many 'Yanks' get down here on their bikes....which I can understand as you 'have it all' over there. And the ones that do seem to forget that Australia is similar in size to the USA (48 States) and relatively 'empty'!

So, not wanting to become boring.....Here's to the good folks of the USA and may we remain good friends forever.

Cheers,

Paul.

Also meant to mention that 'Dog' lives quite close to me and I hope to catch up with him at some stage in the near future to share 'travel tales' (I didn't know him before I started following this thread).

Bloody good thing I like a Bourbon or two eh? Hope he goes easy on this old bloke!!!

Cheers,

Paul.

(I do actually owe Unc a beer. And LXMary a spiced rum. I am greatly remiss and seeking to resolve this situation. Oh... and Dog a carton of VB and... bloody hell... now I know why I skipped the country)

Yeah well... mine can't be the only posts around here that are

"weird"

Or can they? Now I'm hearing voices too! All right! Just what I needed... more company in my head.
