I took a ride up to Caddo Lake State Park over Labor Day weekend. I left early Saturday morning and headed out I-10 toward Beaumont, then cut up Highway 12 to Highway 87. 87 runs all the way up through the center of Sabine National Forest alongside Toledo Bend Reservoir which borders on the state line of Texas and Louisiana. That's a beautiful highway, perfect for being on a bike! I then took a jumbled maze of little FM roads to Uncertain, TX on the shore of Caddo Lake. Caddo Lake is pretty much a swamp with a forest of old-growth Cypress trees covered in Spanish moss thriving in the very shallow water of the lake's edge. I was checked into my room by noon and then rode around the little roads surrounding the lake. I also took a paddle-wheel boat ride that tours the lake. I'd love to go back up and do some kayaking there. It's kind of a surreal place.
Saturday morning I rode into Jefferson, TX about 25 miles from Uncertain, and had breakfast. Then I headed out to ride around Lake of the Pines. I was back in Jefferson about 2 in the afternoon and had lunch there, then rode back to my room in Uncertain. The rest of the afternoon I spent riding around Caddo Lake State Park and hiking a few trails. Got up about 5 Sunday morning and headed back to Houston, basically retracing the route I had come up.
Hope you enjoy the pictures.
