Virginia & West Virginia Mountain Ride

240 miles, 6 hours in the saddle. Nice ride with some dirt / gravel mountain roads. Here is the route I took.

From Frederick, Md.
81 South
42 South
West on Wolf Gap Road
South on Liberty Furnace Road
South on Alum Springs Road
West on Crooked Run Road
Turns into Upper Cove Road in West Virginia
North on 259
Quick left on Howards Lick River State Park Road to The Lost River State Park
Right on Helmick Rock road
Right on Dove Hollow road
Left on 259 North
East on 50
81 North
51 East
340 East
Home.

This was a classic Scrambler ride. It included interstate highway, state highway, rural asphalt, crush and run, gravel and dirt roads. Going over the mountain into W.Va. on Crooked Run road was amazing. Lots of steep gravel /dirt with switch backs and some large stony terrain. I don't know how anything but a jeep could handle this road. The Scrambler did a great job.

Incredible views and mountain countryside. I highly recommend this ride to anyone with a Scrambler or dual sport.

I only stopped a few times and the following pics do not do the views justice. But here they are anyway.

Very nice, pjames! Do you ever get up to Harford county? There's some good riding north of Bel Air, up around Rocks State Park.

Fantastic! That part of VA/WV is beautiful. Thanks for the report.

Hidesert: I'm not sure where Rocks State Park is. I'll have to look it up to see if I've been by there.

I have been in that area on a couple of occasions. Was rolling along on Rt. 1 North when I happened upon the Conawango Dam. Caught me completely by surprise. I had no idea that it was there. It's was quite a spectacle.

I have also ridden West of Rt. 1 through Northern Maryland and down through the horse country of Hunt Valley. Also like to get up to Lancaster, Pa. area.

The one place I won't go is to the Eastern shore because that involves crossing the Chesapeake Bay bridge. I am terrified of tall bridges. I wish I could get over that phobia because I know there are thousands of miles of beautiful countryside on the Delmarva Peninsula.

The dam is pretty cool. It's rotten with Bald Eagles, too. There's good riding all around there. I laid the foundation of what motorcycle skills I have between there and Lancaster.

Come west some time!

Hope you can make it down there sometime. Not very technical riding but very serene. I like to refer the the southern DelMarVa as "the land that time forgot.

Be sure to take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel too!
