Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Hey All,
Hope this is not too inappropriate, but I thought a very few of you might be interested in our AT hike if you enjoyed our motorcycle trip reports from past years.

The R3 sits idle this summer while we attempt a 2000+ mile hike. Conditioning not being what it used to be, we've downgraded to just doing what we can handle.

Happy trails and good riding to you all!!

Awesome.

I'm curious; with all the amazing terrain to cover in your backyard, why did you choose the AT?

And absolutely have fun!

Have fun...it is the experience of a lifetime. I thru-hiked in 1996. It was the hardest and the easiest thing I have ever done. It is also the lifetime accomplishment I reflect on most when things get tough in life. If you can thru-hike the AT you can do anything. Katahdin summit after 4 months on the trail.

Medic09,...we have never backpacked extensively before...or at all, for that matter. We felt the logistics of resupply, support, etc...on the PCT were likely more that we were ready to face. 7-9 days worth of food is a lot of weight, and at our speed, that might be even more with the greater distances.

Brady....anyone who manages a thru-hike is to be respected, IMHO. 4 months is a pretty amazing time. We're not going to manage to finish...we're just too slow and spend too much time seeing sights along the way, but we're already at 4 1/2 months and feel we've put out about as much effort as the young ones who are able to do 20+ mile days.

The quality of people we've met on this trip has been amazingly high with lots of kids between college and work, and retired people with great attitude.

Thanks for the responses guys....and I appreciate the thread not being deleted.

Have a great time! You certainly won't regret it; and you'll be part of an ongoing legend.

I hiked pieces of the AT in New England as a kid in CT. A few years back we were in MA for five years, and I spent time on sections of the AT again; this time mostly in winter. Winter on the AT, snowshoeing and skiing from shelter to shelter was great.

Post pics! This thread is useless without pics!

I'm jealous!

I've always wanted to thru-hike the AT, but have never been able to carve out the time to do so. However, I have managed to hike sections of the AT in almost every state is crosses.

I have to imagine the trail is fairly busy this year due to the economy and all. What a great place to go to get away and reset. I too have met some fantastic people with some great stories of how and why they're on the trail.

What a great opportunity for you. Enjoy and be safe!
