Tuesday, June 14, 2005 – Newnan GA to Stecoah, NC – 350 miles

I tried to avoid Atlanta and it’s burbs on the way to here, but managed to go throught stop light hell for a bit before relenting and jumping on I75 into I575, into 5 And on up into NC. Two days of fighting heat and traffic. I’m cooked and staying put in this here tent site for a couple of nights. And another thing…. I’m not going west. I’m not going to spend 6 of the 14 days I do have slabbing across country.

I looked up, and made my destination, the area around Deals Gap. I settled on some campground that was off the beaten trail and next to a creek. Sounded good to me! The Iron Horse Campground is where I am. A great spot as they go. No where near a road and a very nice creek galloping through the place. While waiting for the attendant, I noticed they were written up in last Decembers MCN, and the light came on so to speak. They have wireless hooked up to a sat dish!.. Yee haa, mildred!

I took a few pictures over the last day and a few of the campground. It is now time to tend dinnah!.

It's been a few days since I posted... I've been riding every day in the area around Stecoa, NC.

It is Saturday morning. The Horizons Unlimited group landed here at the campground and I signed up to participate in the event, not to mention getting the Tshirt!

Once again I have a fair amount of write up to post, but time gets short.

I've been adding photos to my gallery. Here are a few, and you can go browse the entire set at

Here a few to gander on

Wednesday June 15, 2005 South Loop - Deals Gap and Cherahola Skyway - 275 Miles

It was especially nice to sleep in this morning. OK, well… it was the 1st night in the tent for a while and I didn’t sleep to well. Ran into a few people in the campground last night and this morning, but by the tenters were few. There are also cabins and a bunk house the property, which were host to a few couples. Bill, who used to be form NY and now lives in TN, came early for a meeting of some group called Horizons Unlimited. I say “some group” because at the time that is how I saw them, not knowing any better. Charlie also showed up, and he brought food with him, so we ate up a storm last night. Steaks and shrimpies.. MmmmM..

Today I decided to run Deals Gap and the Cherahola Skyway. The gap is what it is, much tightness of corner and elevation change. An Amazing stretch of road. I found it very challenging and a real lesson in cornering. Anyone can get a lot out of the Dragon if you look at it as a stone upon which to sharpen your riding skills. I had no close calls because I wasn’t pushing it, but there were a few who were, but being a weekday the traffic was very light. Once over the pass on 129 I went south on Rt 72, then used 421? to jump over to Rt 360 which dumps into Tellico Plains. This is where the Cherahola skyway terminates. If you took the Blue Ridge Parkway and mixed it with the dragon you’d have the Cherahola. It meanders a mountain range the way the BRP does, but it has more challenging corners.

Dragon Curves

Near the the Robbinsville end there is a decreasing radius corner that bit the sport biker in front of me. I was following two sport bikes and the first disappeared around the corner ahead to the right. As number two entered the corner I looked down to check my speed, and started to apply brakes. When I looked up his bike was down on the inside headed for the guardrail and he was finishing a tumble and popped up in the air. His FZ1 was missing everything on the right side. He seemed ok, but I bet after the adrenaline wears off he’ll be a bit sore. I noted a SLO painted on the lane before the corner, obviously put there by a local benefactor.

The loop was a most of the day affair with my arrival in Robbinsville around 2:30 pm. It had taken 5 hours to do the loop. I had a great/cheap lunch at the Mexican joint next to the bike shop. I’m bad at names, but chirizo and eggs, with a couple of wraps, beans and rice. All for $4.97. I stopped by the bike shop next door and yakked it up with the bearded guy, I mentioned he’d be getting a visitor soon, bought a MadMap and a couple of dragon stickers. One for the helmet and one for the bike.

I made my way back to the IronHorse by about 4pm. I noted a distinct soreness from all the spirited riding in the corners. Working the bike by shifting the body is a workout!

The techniques in the Lee Parks book are right on. Shifting weight to the inside creates so much more stability in the corner. Because the bike isn’t over as far, especially on Pilot Roads, it is smoother and less twichy. Tire profiles are something I learned more about this evening. I was reading a bit on www.sport-touring.net and found a great explanation on tire profiles and the effect they have on various riding conditions. The profile of a Pilot road is such that it takes much more effort at the edges to get more turn than the effort it takes to initiate and continue through a less extreme corner.

I moved the tent to a new location close to the stream. Having talked to a few of the early arrivers for the Horizons event, I decided to stick around, so I claimed a better tent sight for the next few days.

Hi VW...

That is the plan, to summarize the trip in terms of my expectation of myself and the bike and the gear... Shared experience helped me distill my own thoughts prior to the trip, so that is what I want to give back. We all react differently to everything, yet the physicality of the world is such that shared experience allows us to pretend we are in the same situation and allows us to pretend how we would react in the same situation.

cheers...

now off to work and the real world.

Thursday June 16, 2005 Local in Stecoa – North Loop -Deals Gap & Smokey Mountain Park

I woke up lazily again. I was really relaxed, not having to push miles again today. I chose to do a loop on the northern side of the Iron Horse. It started by again running up Hwy 28, a great road in itself, and onto the Dragon for another run. Once across the mountain, I took a right onto the Foothills Parkway, a very nice almost deserted roadway running through the mountains to the north. It then connects up vis Rts 321 & 73 to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, where all the fun turned into traffic hell. The scenery almost made up for the constant line of slow moving traffic. This loop took way too long and I wouldn’t recommend it. The difference in traffic volume form the Cherohala Skyway to here was dramatic to say the least. Route 421 runs through the park and is apparently a big “must do” for cages and land yachts of all types. The passes and forests were awesome, with a deep, dark and old feel to them.

I also stopped in Bryson City for food and alcohol, remember that dry county thing. Once again I made it back to camp later than I had wanted to. I really wanted and early day, but it was not to be.

In doing a chain and tire inspection I noted that the chain was in very good shape, well lubed if a bit loose.

I also noted that the rear tire seemed to be doing well also,

yet a closer inspection showed the wear bar was 1/32” away from being flush.

Uh-oh. Yet as I looked at mileages since it was installed, I had almost 5k on it. Considering the loads and speeds and 1900+ miles of slabbing it, I wasn’t that surprised or upset. I called the dealership in Asheville, Myers Motorcycles, and I was able to get set up for an appointment Friday morning to have the tires swapped out. I also mentioned the problem with the loose ignition switch. The person I talked to was out the door to the Brits in Georgia rally some 50 miles South of where I was.

I crashed early again, but I didn’t get too far. Someone in the public room across the way was playing some sort of video on the projector and through the impressive sound system. Loud would be one word to describe it. The sound of revving rice rockets, sound effects of crashing and glass breaking and police sirens…. I sure it was a great video. It was 9 pm when I tried to nod off and it was 10 PM when I got up, marched over to the room and after making a comment or two about the loudness and the open windows and that tents some 50 feet away on the other side of the creek, I shut the windows and grumped back to my tent. I was a bit miffed that the gang playing the video could be so rude to others in the campground. I later learned that it was one of the owners playing the video and that quiet hour at the Iron Horse is 11pm. Be warned that if you are a person that tends to nod off by 9-10, you may have some difficulty doing so.

The Iron Horse is a great campground, off the road and next to a creek. A creek that had garbage hooked around several rocks the entire 5 days I was there. The people and food and atmosphere are nearly perfect, as are the well kept ground and clean showers. A bit more effort would and there would be no complaints at all. These two small issues marred a near perfect stay. I don;t let stuff like this bother me, I just note it a keep having a good time.
