Someone at the bike shop should greet you when you enter, if for no other reason than to help you identify at least one employee. Depending on when you stop by, the place can be pretty busy. Staff at the shop are great, and the parts/accessories team know their products. They don't act any differently if they think you are a rider or not. My wife (clueless on bikes) has shopped there for gifts and they took good care of her.
I found the Ducati shop to be similar. Good people, will spend time with you, but for the most part will leave you alone until you have a question. There are a couple other shops where the staff will greet you, but won't be very good about giving facts or details about products.
Cycle Gear is another good shop in Austin. Good guys there too.
