RAT Pack Success

Anybody out there have advice on making a RAT Pack successful. I'm considering being a pack co-leader, along with 2 other guys. I would appreciate any suggestions for activities, and dealer support. Thanks, tommyturbo2

Your first question might be - "how do we define 'success'" - especially if you are going to have three co-leaders. Are you siccessful if 5 people are involved and all have a great time? Do you need 80 or more members? Are track days the ultimate or a never thing? Camping?

When I became the leader (not intentionally) of what is now a large pack, I was really surprised to find that a lot of those who attended the meeting (they are important - they attend!) wanted to go on three day camping rides.

So - that is what I organized.

Over the years the wishes of the group have changed, but first things first - what do the three of you think a "RAT pack" should be? What do you want?

The key to a good RAT pack is communication. Set up a Web site and update it regularly. New triumph owners are always looking to ride with other Triumph riders and the first thing that kills that is a web site that hasn't been updated in months. Start an e-mail group list and send out monthly updates and remind them of meetings and rides. Everyone is so busy without a reminder, they forget, (example - no reminder, 6 people at the meeting; with reminder 25 people at the meeting).

Also once you get a good group together don't take all the bitchin personally, you won't be able to make everyone happy. Triumph has too many types of bikes to make that happen.

Last but not least - Have fun on your rides!

Check out our small site.

I make t-shirts too. That helps keep people involved. Demo days at the dealership, monthly meeting at a local pub maybe. Just make sure you organize alot of rides. If it's two people who show up, then have a good two person ride. The thing is, that you have to try to be at all the rides and monthly meetings.

Rides keep people involved. Rides that people actually like. The three most important things about rides are planning, planning, and planning.

Try to start out by finding 2-3 dedicated Triumph riders to help with the planning and leading of rides. Planning an event can be exhausting - but lots of fun! Also, having a consistent place to meet every month - this helps new members find you easily. I prefer a British Pub to stay on "theme".

Don't feel too bad if initial attendance at rides and such starts out small. A small group can have as much fun as a big one - sometimes more. Word will get around, and more people will show up.

Have a thick skin. Folks will sometimes be critical. Don't give up.
