Another biking petition.

Here's a petition asking the government to mount a national TV campaign to raise driver awareness of the legality of bikers filtering in traffic:

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/driver-awareness/

The guy who started it wrote to MCN and his letter appears in this week's edition.

I'm not sure about this one, because sometimes it can be best not to demand a clarification - the government could just decide that the simplest thing to do to avoid confusion would be to make filtering illegal

As it is in Germany and some states in the USofA.

I've signed it anyway because I think that it's too ingrained into the UK psyche for them to ban it. Although........fox hunting, hand guns etc.

My philosophy has always been - Don't ask, just do it. If it's not legal some jobsworth is bound to come along and stop you.
That's clarification enough.

I do agree that drivers should be aware that we are doing nothing illegal but I don't think that is the reason they become offensive/defensive (these, it has to be said are a minority). The top and bottom is that they don't want anyone making swifter progress than themselves.

+1 to that but I'd probably go further and ask all you UK riders:

If the government ran such a campaign would you feel it ok to drop your guard just a little bit knowing that all the cagers have been told that it's ok?

LOL - drivers know that they're supposed to give way to vehicles approaching on a major road, but I always assume that they will wait until I'm near enough and then screech out with wheels smoking
