Guys (& gals), which if any breakdown service comes recommended. I am a new biker, new road user so I have no experience of any of the 4th ememrgency services (or so I recall them calling themselves).

Any advice?

Cheers

Dave

I originally had RAC cover with my bike and got stranded. To cut a long story short after sending round a numpty in a van (after I told them I needed to be trailered), they took SEVEN HOURS to get a trailer to me.

I now have a straight 'pay and claim' policy with AutoAid which covers my car and bike for roadside assistance, onward travel and homestart for £32/year

I have no complaints with the AA.... and I don't even have a car for them to come and sort out....

I use the RAC, had to use them twice so far, long wait but good when they arrived (bikes fairly low on the list of , unless you tell them you are a pregnant women with two toddlers broken down in Moss Side and the scary man with the gun is trying to sell you crack).

I've got RAC cover with my insurance. I called them out once when I had a Honda CB when I got an oil leak on the way to work. The bloke turned up and told me I had an oil leak. :???:
I've stuck with the same insurance company as I couldn't be bothered to shop around to save £20 so I've still got RAC cover, which I hope I never need.

Never needed breakdown cover with my bike, but have with cars.

The AA seemed to give up easily, and only fixed 1/3 fixable problems (being a broken accelerator cable, the two others being broken clutch cables, which were fixable). Happy to tow, though.

I had RAC cover for a year, which I needed once. Again, they were keen to tow rather than investigate, but the problem was fixable - a sensor had fallen out of a pipe. Volvo kindly charged £90 to put it back.

I don't really rate either, but in fairness, I've had my money's worth out of them - £40 a year, about six tows works out cheaper than no cover at all.

Years ago the AA made me wait 9 hours! So I cancelled and went with RAC. Always found em to be good. However my bank account offers free AA cover and Carol Nash Ins have their own breakdown cover so I cancelled the RAC as having that as well was a tad overkill!

To be honest I think they are all much of a muchness.

After an 8 hour wait for the RAC, I changed to the AA. Since I haven't broken down since, I've no idea what they're like-from these posts, they're all the same and will piss you off at some point.
I do remember a very interesting rescue by the RAC in the early 80's (how could I forget it?). My sidecar outfit blew up, which was a fairly regular occureence, coming into Ceredigion on a mountain road. Manage to find the only call box for 20 miles around. A nice, jovial bloke in a van turned up. He towed me on a piece of rope the final 30 miles of my journey, at a steady 30-40 mph. I remain traumatised to this day. And thankful.
