Hi all,
went into my local dealer to get a new visor and came out with a new Thruxton. Try explaining that to the wife!
The Thruxton is just too quiet with the standard exhuast so I ordered the TOR,s at the same time. My queston is do i need to tell my insurance that I have a non standard exhuast and if I don't what could be the implications?

Cheers

Hi TinTin,

The following is only my opinion, others may disagree with me.

In my experience insurance companies will take ANY oportunity they can to not pay out for a claim. They state very clearly that you must inform them of any modifications to the original specification of the bike. Different pipes affect the power output of the bike.

A sharp claims adjuster may well notice and, God grant it never happen, if you do have a big spill you might not get anything from the insurance company.

I would phone them up and say something like, "I am thinking of changing the exhaust pipes on my bike, if I do am I obliged to tell you and if so what will it do to my insurance?" That way you will know how much more they will charge and be able to make a properly informed decision.

Mark is exactly right - I asked my insurance agent (Carole Nash) about this and they rung round. Some insurers would not accept non road legal exhausts and some would - I chose from the latter group

Thanks for the replies guys.
Spoke to my insurers today and they said if the TOR pipes have a BSI Kite mark its no problem if not, an additional fee will apply. I haven't seen the pipes yet so don't know what the markings will be.

Thanks again,

TinTin

They have stamped into them "Not for road use" - no kite mark I believe - hang on I'll have a look..........

Ok there is no kite mark and it says this: -

"this product does not conform to EPA noise standards. Use on motorcycles subject to EPA regulations constitutes tampering and is a violation of federal law. This is designed for closed circuit competition use only

NOT FOR ROAD USE"

I don't know what EPA stands for -I'm guessing it might be something european - on the other hand the reference to federal law leans towards the USA unless the europeans have federal law

The only thing I know for certain is that my dealer told me to hang to my stock pipes so I can stick them back on for the MOT

a can is only illegal if it states ''not for road use'' so just grind that bit out and polish it up and you shouldn't have a problem!
