I'm planning a trip up and around Scotland in August, need to carry some stuff, not sure how much or for how long yet, but would appreciate any advice on tail packs, panniers, tank bags or even just chucking everything in a bin bag and bungeeing it to the pillion seat. Thanks in advance.

Yeah,
just take a credit card. Soft panniers with lots in them spoil the handling (just my own opinion) particularly low speed stuff and with a pillion feel cramped. Tank bags are ok until you need to get under the bubble. My preferred option is a tiny rucksack with very little in it (all soft stuff in case the worst happens). Travel light you always need less than you think.
That said I do have a baglux tankbag which has been pretty good, it has a zip that halves the volume so you can get what gear you need in without having a huge thing sticking up in front of you. it also has a clear plastic top for a map as well which is useful.
Enjoy your trip.

Tank bag-but gets in the way-ruck sack, but get one that gets its support from your waist or your shoulders will ache-or just a cheap hold all as a tail bag, with everything inside wrapped in binliners. Or a proper tail bag.

Have a look at Frank Thomas' cargo range - they are well made and have that magic spiral zip thing that allows the bag to expand if you put a lot in - or shrink if you only carry small loads

I bought the kind of rectangular version for my Bonnie but they do a slanted version for sports bikes

Their Monster tailpack is a good piece of kit too - with some extra bungees it's solid as a rock

Not expensive either

Handy hint - I have a drypack waterproof kit bag - the sort of thing canoeists and sailers use with a roll top seal - I used it to keep all my sleeping gear in (Therma-rest mattress, sleeping bag, inflatable pillow, some spare clothes)
- I use a Macpac Celeste for two up trips and the Hilleburg Acto for solo - its a brilliant tent, quality design and manufacture and weighs only 1.6 kg - keep your tent in a bag (I use rubble sacks) to keep it dry if it's raining while you are travelling and if the outer is wet when you pack up keep your inner tent in a separate rubble sack to keep it dry for the next night

Cargo nets for bikes combined with bungees of various lengths are very useful for holding things securely

In Scotland rain may well be your enemy so for the things that MUST remain dry try double wrapping - put clothes etc in small bin liners and then put your bin liners into a tough sack like a rubble bag before they go into your panniers

Here's a picture of the Cargo panniers and the sailbag on my bike and the Monster tailpack on my (then) girlfriends bike

Invest in some decent hard luggage. If you intend to tour a bit. Makes life so much easier and you can lock and forget for those moments when you are way from the bike. Yes its big. Its not always pretty but it just cant be beaten for practicality. Best thing I ever bought for my bike. Its seen me on tours all over Europe and UK and the best bit is sitting in the morning enjoying a cuppa before the ride watching my mates all struggle with bungees bin liners or loaded down with helmets leathers etc in hot weather whilst my kit is all safely locked away. Its great. Go get some!
