Street and Sport RAT run to Maruia Springs 27 January

We're meeting behind Street and Sport on Sunday 27 January at 0900 with the plan to be on the road and making noise by 0930. Lewis Pass is always a good run, so lets see what we can do to those corners.

Usual beer, bbq and bull**** behind the shop afterwards.

Smile Timaru crew

We will be at the Woodstock rally that week end, so have a good ride and take care. Mark.

Only problem I have with Maruia Springs is that it is very upmarket now and they have done away with their public bar and replaced it with a formal bar. It is now totally Japanese owned and operated business that is very upmarket and wouldn't really cater for a larger group of riders suddenly appearing on their doorstep. In saying that the ride itself would be brilliant.

Ah, thanks for that Corky. It's been a couple of years since I was there. Looks like it's probably Springs Junction or Hanmer. Pity I'm not supposed to ride a bike for a few more weeks or that would be a perfect excuse for a ride this Saturday.

A few options - feedback sought

1. Springs Junction return - still Lewis Pass but no pub (that I can recall). Total distance around 400km return.

2. Hanmer Springs return - plenty of places for lunch, but (in my books) a bit touristy. Total about 260 kms return (just about enough to get the tyres warm).

3. Head up State Highway 7 and swing down to Waiau (luvverly corners...), lunch at the Waiau pub then back home either via Cheviot (270 kms) or back the way we came (320 kms).

Back to plan A..

I just had a call from a very nice Japanese man telling me that the cafe would be open and happy to supply us with pies, beer and coffee; the three main food groups scientifically proven to sustain a biker, and for the more sophisticated among us he offered paninis. I prefer pies, but then I ride a Thunderbird and like stuff like wire wheels, round analogue instruments and prefer my beer in a handle.

MMM Pies and BEEEEEEEEEEEEErrrrr MMMM. Sustains Triumph riders sure enough. I have proved the scientific fact on many occasions and are the living proof. Hopefully I can make the ride next Sunday. Very keen on an overnighter the the Coast if one was ever on the cards. Nice ride through Arthurs Pass and back through Punakaiki highway, Buller river and Lewis pass. I sure there would be a lot off interest from the TOMCC boys in attending.

I'm definately planning an overnighter - probably late March/early April. I'll make a call on it within the next week, and spread the word. I like your thinking, but I'd add Westport and make it the overnight destination then back down through Reefton and Lewis.

The other option was down through Wanaka, across the Haast and up the coast, but maybe a little far for an overnighter. Either way we are totally spoiled for riding in this part of the world - when God made the South Island he designed it for bikers.

Hi Tmcmkiwi.
No problems with Westport, that would be a good spot for a a night of festivities. Could always do a two night overnighter for a Wanaka\Haast run. Tie it into a long weekend like Easter or Anzac day that falls on a Friday this Year. Hell i would even take a Friday off work for a run like that if I had too :-)

The TOMCC are planning an overnighter again at Whitecliffes and I will propose the dates of either March 29th or April 5th. Our meeting is this Friday and I will get back to you with a confirmed date for our overnighter. Hopefully we can avoid it clashing with your RAT event. Of course RAT members are more than welcome to attend our overnighters. I have a foot in each camp being members of both organistations as do other TOMCC members.

I think most of us have a foot in both camps. Why don't we sit down with a beer and a calander so we can have our TOMCC cake and RAT it too.
