Hi Fitz.

I haven't received any positive service from Blackfoot. I have a dyno appointment at Echo on Saturday June 28 at noon. I'll get my carb work checked and then ride back through Jasper, Kamloops, then through Needles into the Nelson / Kaslo area, and then back to Lethbridge. All I ever use Blackfoot for anymore is to order parts, and even then it's a problem. I wanted to get the O-ring and crush washers for the oil line to do the valve clearances, and they don't have them. When I asked what they do if a mechanic needs to adjust valves on a customer's bike and replace those parts, he just gave me a blank stare.

Good luck with your new bike.

Thumbs up

Well, I can now honestly say that as far as sales go, Echo is pretty great!!!
Picked up my 08 Thruxton today, couldn't have asked anything more from Rick and Stephen. First service won't be for awhile , curious to see how that goes.
I'll post up pics of the new ride shortly.

Parts...
Earlier in the week I called looking for new tires. I was quoted $ right out of the Parts Canada catalogue (which is available online for anyone to see).

I also asked them to order me a BMC air filter---no can do, apparently they have to bring them in by the dozen...even though I quoted the Parts Canada catalogue page number.

Oddly enough Alberta Cycle was able to order the air filter, and a Renthal Sprocket (2 up in the rear), all while they sold me tires for $200 less than Echo with $30 per wheel install.

Felix, are you saying alberta cycle installed your tires for 30 a wheel? I ordered my Avons online and got them from Blackfoot direct, cheapest I could find.... Took them to Echo for install. $120 bucks to mount the rear tire on my Sprint. Man did I get raped. I wonder if Alberta cycle has any experience with Single Sided Swing arms.... they can do all my tires for 30 bucks.

I got Michelin Pilot Road 2 (the 2 compound tires) for $442 (plus tax) for the set (the rear is a 190 so it is more $). This was $200 less than Parts Canada's sticker price.

$120 for install on the rear? Have you ever had your rear wheel off? It is f'n simple. One nut and the wheel comes off the rhs. The brake disc, sprocket, everything stays on the swingarm.

I paid $90 last year to have a front installed at Echo--the front is a bit more complicated, have to remove the brake calipers, undo the pinch bolts, and unthread the axle, deal with the spacer and the speedo gear--then grease it upon re-assembly*

*I called Echo yesterday asking about what grease to use on the front axle. Service told me it comes from canadian tire and is in what looks like a mayonaise jar...I know that axle grease is kinda important and should be really sticky/stringy. So I called Cycle Works (near my work) and posed the same question. They sold me some proper Motul grease in a jar for $11.

Anyway, the front is way harder than the rear...Echo must have charged you extra to make up some of their margin on the tire you bought elsewhere.

$30 install: if you remove your own wheels AB Cycle will only charge $30/tire to install and balance and fill with nitrogen. They will also do this in the same day. Triple M Motorsports charges the same amount (they are located on 51ave across from Totem Lumber) and will do so for tires you bring in--not sure if AB Cycle will do the $30 install for tires they don't supply.

To remove your wheels you will need some odd sized sockets (provided the Sprint is the same as my S3):
--46mm socket (I have one you can borrow, along with a 2' breaker bar but it only cost $10 at Princess Auto)
--17mm hex socket (again, I have one. Just bought it at Greggs Dist. for $16)
--A centre stand helps; I think your sprint has one??? The S3 doesn't so I used a scissor jack bolted to a frame (for a larger/more stable footprint) underneath the swingarm link and secured it with straps from the footpegs out to this frame. I then slipped some straps over the front engine sliders and hung the front from an overhead crane (a beam in your garage would work, as would a front fork stand).

The cheapest place to get tires (that I have found) is High Performance Cycles in Florida
www.hpcycles.com
They buy tires by the truckload and sell them cheap--they don't always stock what you want though. They were going to sell me a set of Metzeler M3s for $270 installed! Untill I told them where I was. They will ship to Canada via USPS for $55/set, so it would have cost <$300 for those Metzelers to my door. I wanted a more touring oriented tire though, as I have +5000km of trips planned this summer and don't want to replace my rear multiple times. They also sell on ebay under the seller name hpc395, so you can use paypal.

Felix - I used to be a heavy duty mechanic so I have all sorts of odd sized and giant sized tools. Yeah its not hard to get the rear off and I knew that but they charged me one hour shop rate to change the tire. I wont even tell you how much they charged me to respray one of my fairings.....

Felix are you heading to Nelson for the raid?

Thanks for the tip on where to buy tires. I will see what I can get from them next set.

So instead of beating the streets looking for a 17mm hex socket I should have just asked you...

Yes. Dunno which day though.

In years past I have left Friday AM (I usually try to leave at 7 but it always ends up being 830) and arrive in Nelson sometime after dinner. Last year I took a bit of a detour down the Grand Trunk Forestry Rd south of Kananaskis for 111km, so I arrived in Nelson a little later (9 I think).

I usually ride home Sunday after a late breakfast and arrive late evening. Last year I rode through WA, ID, and MT, stayed in Kalispell, and rode home Monday thru Glaciar Nat'l Park.

I usually ride just above the ton, any faster than 200 and the wind blast is a bit much on a naked bike. 2 years ago I rode that section between Cranbrook and Invermere at 230 as indicated on GPS (the speedo is a little optimistic). It was 40 deg+ though and I needed the wind.

Yeah Its hot down there. My sister lives in Nelson and I lived all but the last 3 years in Kelowna/Penticton. I am going to leave Thursday afternoon and maybe camp along the way. I am not sure. I am trying to get a group together to go and then see what the group wants.

Got my new Metzler rear tire from Cycle Works in Acheson.Parts guy was professional and experienced,oh, and polite.
What a refreshing change from the Echo parts dept.
I have also had bad parts service at Alberta Cycle and will not go back.
